Who can resist a good renovation story? This is our Before & After annual issue, where we celebrate the brave renovators who saw the challenge and rose to face it head on. Landscape designer Oliver Sizeland of Growing Rooms really knows how to make an entrance. Fringed with dense foliage and framed in a sculptural arbour resembling a guard of honour, the garden entry to this house in Sydney’s east makes its owners and their visitors feel instantly at home. The all-embracing structure and massive pavers create an alluring sense of arrival. Before he began work on the garden in early 2020, however, the resident family and their many visitors would have felt like anything but VIPs. They were met by a slab of concrete inside the gate, with a plain path leading to the front door at the side of the Tuscan-style house. EXTERIOR “The addition is set back from the house, creating a north-facing courtyard suntrap for the living areas,” says Imogen. Light-coloured Colorbond custom orb roofing reflects heat away from the structure. INTERIOR Increasing access to natural light was a key driver of architect Imogen Pullar’s design. “We now have nine skylights in the house,” says owner Mooey. These feature above the kitchen on the east, and the open stairs to the west, inviting the sun in throughout the day. “We also maximised the home’s existing fabric and modified it minimally,” says Imogen. While editing the homes selection for this Before & After issue, we spent hours immersed in some really clever and enormously inviting renovations and interior makeovers. What we saw was a whole new movement away from contrived spaces and slick minimalism, toward a more eclectic and layered interior vibe. So, while Australians remain obsessed with the joy of renovation and transformation, surprisingly, it is vintage pieces, op-shop finds and inherited or heirloom furniture that is re-emerging as the surprise trend in interiors. A celebration of mish-mash, wabi-sabi and layered eclectica, it’s heading straight into our hearts in a blast of nostalgia, craftsmanship and affordability.
