As this issue goes to pr int, I am finalising plans for my kitchen renovation. Again. It’s just par for the course in this job, seeing all of the beautiful projects that constantly land in my Inbox. Just when I think I have my cupboard configuration sorted – another great new idea blows my mind. It’s also interesting observing how different people attack their kitchen plan; do you start with the mater ials wishlist or appliance choices? 1 PLAYING WITH FIRE At the early discussion stage of this home’s redesign, the couple who owned it had just found out they were expecting their first child. By completion, they had a nine-month-old little boy. So, inter ior designer Mar iah Burton (pictured) from Folk Studio knew all along that this makeover needed to deliver on the family-fr iendly front while also fitting in some specific requests. A feature fireplace was one such ask that’s not so common here in Australia (particularly where they are in Clovelly, close to the beach). “This was quite important for the clients because they’re Polish,” says Mariah. “They told me that in Poland the fireplace is the centre of the living room because their winters are so harsh. A lucky encounter planted the seed for this lush paradise plunging down a gully on Sydney’s Northern Beaches long before the owner even set eyes on the property. When previously living in a neighbouring suburb and looking through his kitchen window, he often glimpsed a branded landscape designer’s ute parked in the street. So, when he and his wife bought the valley enclave with a ho-hum garden in 2021, who better to approach than that local company, Formed Gardens?
