In this issue we have a special focus on cables. Cables are the delightfully mesmerizing raised stitches that travel across fabric like rivers moving through the landscape. The skilled designers behind the projects in this issue have taken crochet cables to new levels, and most of the ten bewitching cable projects here are, in fact, named for rivers that wind through regions where the designers live. All of them show the distance that crochet cables have traveled since the Aran cable afghans of the mid-twentieth century. I’m in the business of putting pieces together to form a coherent whole. When I set out to design something in crochet, I usually envision form, and then I construct content. If I wish the form to be the star of the work, I simplify the content. For example, if I am presenting a super-cool cardigan silhouette, I keep the stitch pattern understated so that the form will shine. If, on the other hand, I want to showcase a nifty stitch pattern, I will choose an uncomplicated form. Yarn also plays a role. If my stitch pattern is complicated or highly textured, I opt for a solid-colored, smooth yarn so that the pattern doesn’t get lost. As a fan of constructing things in unusual ways, I often wondered how to make sideways cables. I had made V-shaped cables in a sideways manner, but I wanted a more traditional-looking, twisting sort of cable. When I started swatching for a chunky cable scarf, I became determined to figure out a way to make cables that would allow me to work the scarf sideways. And I did it! The St. Croix Scarf is the scrumptious result. In the resulting scarf, the long edges look so neat and clean that they don’t require any additional finishing. With this method of making cables, the fabric is soft and drapey, unlike the thick, stiff fabric that can result from crossing all those post stitches using a bulky yarn. This issue is chock-full of cable projects! Most of these projects call for the use of post stitches, so this little primer should have you on your way to cabling in no time. Post stitches are worked around the post of a stitch, rather than in the top of the stitch as with regular stitches, and they create dimension in the fabric. Post stitches come in two primary types: front post stitches and back post stitches. The difference between back and front post stitches lies in where you insert your hook. Tweed yarn was once primarily wool spun and plied with flecks of color. Now, tweed yarns are available in a range of animal and plant fibers. The construction may be plied or chainette or singles, expanding tweed’s realm beyond fall and winter to year-round. We took a few types of tweed yarn for a spin on a hook to crochet maple leaf motifs. Intrigued by the positive/negative patterns of brioche knitting, I sought out a way to create this fascinating texture using crochet stitches. My version of this method is accomplished using only single crochet, both foundation single crochet and back bar single crochet, which are combined in unusual ways. This technique is featured in the Obion Scarf, a two-color reversible cable-look scarf. When working this technique, it can be challenging to locate the right place to place your hook. Let’s explore this technique in detail using some up-close photographs.
