Many people are familiar with the Sierpinski Triangle, but there is a square version of the pattern called the Sierpinski carpet, and it’s a colorwork dream! The Sierpinski carpet is a plane fractal created by subdividing a square into nine equal parts and removing the center square. You then do the same thing to each of the remaining eight squares and so forth throughout the project. To form traditional Romanian point lace, a particular style of crochet cord is basted to a paper template following an outline of intricate loops and twists. Bridges and links drawn on the paper form a design that is then worked in needle lace, connecting the cord assembly into an independent/freestanding/self-contained fabric. In decorating the hem of the Mermaid’s Net Top, I used a simplified Romanian point-lace technique.
