The Navajo Churro is a breed in search of a fiber market. Revered by the Diné people as a life-sustaining gift, Churro sheep have been providing them lean, sweet meat and wool for centuries. Churro are dual-coated sheep with rough outer guard hairs covering a softer undercoat. A third type of dye-resistant fiber, kemp, makes up a small percentage of a Churro’s fleece. Lustrous and durable with a long staple, Churro wool has little lanolin, takes natural dye well, and can be spun from raw fleece without carding. From the wool, Navajo spinners and weavers have created blankets and rugs evocative of the desert. Former U.S. government policies designed to eradicate the Churro have created a flock composed of many mixed-breed animals with shorter staples and more lanolin, making them…
