Over the summer, I sat with my iPhone in hand on a patio overlooking the mountains, soaking in the fresh air and morning light. I opened a group chat named ‘Elite iOS 17,’ where I was taking part in a lively exchange between members of the iPhone Life team. We exchanged notes on new features, bragged about our discoveries, and most importantly shared custom live stickers. Toddlers in leather jackets, dogs doing acrobatics, cats batting their paws at the screen—it was all there. I had a moment of appreciation—how was this my job?? Each June, I look forward to testing out the beta version of iOS right after Apple debuts it. Getting my hands on features before they’ve hit the mainstream gives me a thrill every time. I like to…
Azio FOQO Pro Wireless Hot-Swappable Keyboard ($129.99) “To say that I’m loving my Azio FOQO Pro keyboard is an understatement. It’s the finest keyboard I’ve ever used, and I test a lot of keyboards. The key strikes are clean, consistent, and satisfying (without waking the neighbors); switching between devices and operating systems is easy; the battery endures constant use; and it’s a beautifully designed addition to my desk aesthetic.” - Cullen Thomas, Senior Instructor Scosche MagicMount Pro ($59.99) “This mount has upgraded my driving experience! Not only do I have a secure spot to place my iPhone, but it also serves as a dash mount while fast-charging my device. Installation was super easy, and the product comes with everything you need to keep the cabling out of sight.” -…
Golden Anniversary It’s Been 50 Years Since the First Call on a Cellphone In 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper stood on 6th Avenue in New York City and placed the first ever call on a cellphone the size of a brick. He rang Joel Engel of Bell Labs, who he’d been in an arms race with to build the first such device. The words he triumphantly spoke were “I’m calling you on a cellphone, but a real cellphone, a personal, handheld, portable cellphone.” While mobile phones would not be commercially available for another 10 years, no one can deny the historical significance of that one phone call. Happy birthday, cellphones! THE BRAIN GAME Your Brain Sends More Signals Than All of the Phones Having a smartphone might feel like…
As I write this, I’m sitting on my couch in a way I’ve been told is not great for my spine, my chin tipped down in a way I’ve been told puts too much pressure on my neck, typing in a way I’ve been told can mess up my wrists. Throughout the decades, as our world has grown more digital, many of us have fretted over the physical ramifications that come from constant use of tiny electronic boxes. And then, Apple announced its new mixed reality headset: the Vision Pro. Responses ranged from unsettled to eager; some were counting down the days until they could create an entire virtual office space with just one headset, while others worried that this wearable could further isolate us from each other. Me? I’m…
WHAT TO KNOW: • Apple’s iOS 17 announcement is packed with practical updates, such as interactive widgets, Live Voicemail transcripts, and better autocorrect. • Customization is also a big theme, introducing personalized Lock Screen-style Contact posters and the ability to turn your photos into live stickers. • There are also some brand-new features, such as Journal for mental health, cat and dog recognition in Photos, and StandBy view. It’s that time, folks; who’s ready for a new operating system? Each year Apple rolls out new iPhone features in September, and this year iOS 17 is improving the apps we use most: Phone, Messages, FaceTime, Photos, Health, and more. Apple has finally addressed a lot of pain points and added improvements that will change the way you use your iPhone once…
The second you download your shiny new OS, you’ll want to start playing with all the new features. But where to start? Here are the iOS 17 features to enjoy as soon as your installation is complete! MUST-TRY MESSAGING TRICKS The first app I opened when my iOS 17 installation was complete was the Messages app. Here are five of my new favorite things to do. See All Your Apps in One Place Access a handy list of iMessage apps next time you’re texting. To the left of your message input field, you’ll see a plus sign. Your six most important (or so Apple deems) apps will pop up on top, but you can swipe up to see a full list. This is where you’ll want to go to access…
