KTM have revealed the first images of their upcoming 990 RC R. This all-new model, the Austrian brand’s first fully-faired large sportsbike in more than a decade, will also be the basis for an entry in Supersport competition. Both road-legal standard and Track editions of the 990 RC R will be offered. Powered by a EURO5+ compliant LC8c parallel twin, the 990 RC R will produce 94kW and 103 Nm, while the shifter for the six-speed transmission can be reversed to race shift pattern. The all-steel frame has been engineered for performance, with increased stiffness, more weight at the front end and a dedicated steering head angle of 25 degrees. That success has spawned an annual ‘Rally Replica’ edition for two decades, starting with the big 660cc singles and switching to 450cc when that capacity limit was introduced for Dakar in 2011. Ducati have created a special edition of their Monster naked in tribute to Ayrton Senna; the Formula 1 World Champion who had a strong connection to Ducati during his F1 career. Based on the Monster SP, the limited edition is identified by a special livery that’s inspired by the flag of Senna’s native Brazil and gains a handful of new features. The Monster Senna was officially unveiled on the weekend of the Emilia-Romagna Formula 1 Grand Prix at Misano, San Marino, in late May. MotoGP will say goodbye to one of its most popular riders at the end of the 2024 season, with Aleix Espargaro announcing his retirement. In a special press conference held at the Catalunya MotoGP round, the 34-year-old Spaniard confirmed this year will be his last as a full-time rider, ending a career that covers more than 300 grands prix and nearly two decades. Across those two decades, Espargaro rode for Honda in the 125cc World Championship, Honda and Aprilia in 250cc/Moto2, plus Ducati, Yamaha, Suzuki, and most recently Aprilia in MotoGP. Espargaro joined Aprilia Racing in 2017, making history with their first race victory in MotoGP. HMG Motorsport KTM’s David Walsh was victorious at this year’s Tatts Finke Desert Race, extending his winning streak in the annual two-day off-road race to five. The Alice Springs local was fastest on the opening leg from Alice Springs to Finke, then rode conservatively to secure the outright win on the return leg. Entry numbers were down by more than 100 this year, with 326 lining up for the Prologue that got underway on Saturday, 8 June. Organisers have cited cost of living pressures for the drop off, believing some entrants are now choosing to do Finke every second- or third-year. BMW Motorrad are set to introduce an automatic transmission system for selected models, aimed at making riding “simpler and more comfortable”. The system, called Automated Shift Assistant (ASA), can allow riders to change gears in the traditional way, or let shifts be made completely automatically. An evolution of BMW’s Shift Assistant Pro, ASA employs two electromechanical actuators that automate clutch and gearshift operation. This eliminates the need for a clutch lever, but the shifter pedal is retained. In ‘M’ shift mode, gear changes are still made by foot, allowing the rider control of when to shift up or down. One of the first major moves in MotoGP’s rider market for 2025 was announced in June, with Marc Marquez signing with the factory Ducati team. As Francesco Bagnaia had extended his contract with the Ducati Lenovo Team back in March, it means Marquez’s arrival will come at the expense of Enea Bastianini, who has been with the squad since 2023. Marquez joined the Gresini Ducati MotoGP satellite team this year after eleven seasons with the Repsol Honda factory team, where he achieved all six of his premier class world championships.
