In another strange festival to add to this month’s wacky stories, local residents in the town of Nejapa, El Salvador, have recently participated in a festival to commemorate a volcanic eruption by hurling flaming, petrol-soaked rags at each other. According to folklore, hot lava that flowed into the town from a huge volcanic eruption in 1922, resulted in residents being forced to abandon the town and was then associated in the form of the local saint, Jeronimo. One festival goer, Ann Alcira, explained, “It’s a story we should never forget, because it is when the volcano erupted...That is how St Jeronimo came to Nejapa” The unique festivities have been happening for over ten years with surprisingly few serious injuries being reported, despite groups launching palm-sized fireballs at each other.
