A Sydney-born woman has completed a unusual and dangerous 7,000 kilometre journey from the Russian Arctic tundra to a wetland in western England. Sacha Dench, who calls herself the “Human Swan”, and her team were tracking the winter migration of Bewick’s Swans, a species that has been declining in numbers over the past few decades. Dench works for the British Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WTT) and said, “The Bewick’s really are amazing birds and it’s been an absolute privilege to accompany them on their annual migration and to play a role in finding out how we can help more of them to make that journey”. Dench and her crew battled injuries, snow and storms as they travelled through the Russian tundra, Lithuanian forests and fields of Portugal and Germany. Adding…

A group of three Australian men have broken the record for the world’s highest basketball shot after launching a ball into a net from the top of a dam in Switzerland. The trio, Brett Stanford, Derek Herron and Scott Gaunson, only needed three attempts to make the record-breaking shot. Herron told the Guinness World Records, “It was a surreal moment nailing it on the third shot... I watched the ball head towards the rim and saw the net move but still had my doubts that it went in until I saw Scott going crazy.” The ball was thrown from a height of 180 metres from the top of the Mauvoisin Dam into a basketball net located on the group below. We were pretty sad when it turned out our existing game headsets didn’t work with PlayStation VR, only basic earbuds. The San Francisco International Airport has enlisted a new team member to help stressed travellers. A small, spotted, Juliana pig named LiLou is the first pig to be certified in the Animal Assisted Therapy Program of the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Joining the existing Wag Brigade, LiLou is the first non-canine of the group who roam the airport terminal wearing “Pet Me!” vests. Alongside LiLou, the Wag Brigade includes 22 trained therapy dogs who assist in treating travel stress. Currently, over 30 American airports have “therapy dog” programs with some even using miniature therapy horses. One report explained that whilst on duty, LiLou performs a variety of impressive moves such as “greeting people with her snout or a wave, twirling and standing up on…

Japan is planning to launch an unusual amusement park where the rides are filled with hot-spring water. In a video promoting Beppu City’s ‘onsen’ hot springs, visitors to the park are seen strolling around in white towels whilst they enjoy rides such as, the hot-tub carousel and a high speed rollercoaster where each carriage is filled with soapy water. The video was filmed at an existing amusement park which was converted into the spa-themed venue using 12 tonnes of locally sourced hot-spring water. Mayor of Beppu City, Yasuhiro Nagano, features on the film promising to make the park permanent if the video reached one million views. Experts have suggested it may only take 10 years until humans are able to live on the Moon following a video from the European Space Agency (ESA) showing what Moon life might look like. According to scientists, frozen water is trapped under craters of the natural satellite’s south pole meaning visitors could tap into a supply of water. With temperatures on the Moon’s surface likely to drop to minus 200 Degrees Celsius, experts claim it is still possible to create a lunar village using minerals and materials found on the surface. Moon settlement is anticipated to be a precursor to sending man to Mars with the Moon potentially acting as a stopover for space travellers. An American company has invented a revolutionary doona that can straighten itself out so that users will never have to make the bed again. Designers of the Smartduvet claim that the clever gadget is not a replacement for existing bedding, but, is simply placed between the doona and doona cover . Linked to a mobile phone application, the grid-shaped, inflatable layer is made from ‘space-age fabric’ that fills with air and helps straighten the duvet. Public relations officer for Smartduvet, Chris Jarry, explained, “It’s a problem everyone can relate to, nobody likes making their bed... A New Zealand fur seal that was discovered in a cow paddock in Bega, New South Wales, has been released back into the ocean. During a drive along Tathra Road in Jellat, Corrie Shepherd spotted the seal coming out of a creek near Russell’s Bridge which then made its way to a nearby paddock. Shepherd phoned the National Parks and Wildlife Service whilst keeping an eye on the seal. Grant Brewer, a National Parks Officer, revealed that three officers and three council rangers joined forces to rescue the seal saying, “It looked like it was in a good condition, but it looked very tired... We thought it wasn’t a good option to try herd it back into the creek so we thought we’d go to plan B, and catch it.”…
