The Russian city of Yekaterinburg recently added a twist to the sport of curling where players usually slide stones on ice towards a target. In this version, instead of stones, teams were invited to push small Russian-made Oka cars across an ice rink. Vehicle engines, gearboxes and other heavy parts were removed to make the cars as lightweight as possible and each team was given nine attempts to get three cars closest to the target. Competitors were even encouraged to crash the cars into one another to gain an advantage. Member of winning team, Andrey Gubaydullinm, said, “We allocated our force right. We had an excellent strategy: we knew which car to push first and which at the end.” Managers from an insurance company identified numerous car accidents being caused…

A New York-based company called Demeter Fragrance Library is known for developing scents based on smells from everyday life. The latest fragrance added to the collection promises to evoke memories of cuddling a collection of kittens. It has taken the company 15 years to successfully capture the scent “Kitten Fur” which represents the “essence of the warmth and comfort of that purrfect spot, just behind kitten’s neck.” Available in a number of different products such as cologne, a roll-on oil, body lotion and shower gel, “Kitten Fur” ranges in price from six dollars to around $40 for a full bottle. Forget the Mother Goose nursery rhyme of the woman who lived in a shoe as we now have the man who lives in a giant cowboy boot. Renowned designer and builder, Dan Phillips, has been putting the final touches on his huge footwear shaped home in Huntsville, Texas. Phillips said, “Since I was a child, I was always fascinated by creating houses that looked like homes in storybooks. I just love storybook architecture.” Standing over 10 metres tall, the boot is just one part of the builders 213-square-metre property which includes a regular shaped house towards the back. A giant chicken has found unexpected fame after confused video viewers thought they were watching a person dressed in a chicken costume. Over 300,000 people have checked out the video via YouTube featuring a Brahma chicken, a breed that can grow to over one metre in height. One Brahma breeder, Luke Price, from South Australia, owns 100 of the feathered fowl and described them as, “generally very placid [but] they do have a bit of a presence about them... the biggest of them would be able to eat off your dining room table.” Even though this particular poultry species are large in size, their eggs are usually the equivalent size to that of a regular chook. The creators behind the Vespa scooter have recently introduced the latest in robotic luggage. Resembling R2D2 from Star Wars, the personal butler can carry your belongings, do your shopping and track your location. The two-wheeled machine named “Gita” was designed by Piaggio Fast Forward and features a zero turning radius and a top speed of 35 kilometres per hour. With the ability to carry 18 kilograms worth of stuff, the electronically powered droid can also operate by itself in a mapped environment meaning it can perform pickups and deliveries all on its own. In the latest in extreme sports, comes “muni” or riding a unicycle up and down a mountain. It sounds crazy, but, for 67-year-old, John Evershed, it is one of his favourite hobbies following a busy day at work. According to Evershed, “Some people go to a gym and sit on a bike that does nothing and they get some exercise... I focus all the time because any moment you could fall off.” As a member of the ACT Unicycle Riders Society, Evershed is a regular participant in “muni” and describes the activity as, “relatively safe... Residents of a small Canadian town were shocked recently when their tap water started to run a strange bright pink colour. Believed to have been caused by an initial problem at the water treatment plant in Onoway, a stuck valve reportedly released an excessive amount of potassium permanganate into the water distribution. Town Mayor, Dale Krasnow, addressed the situation and told the 1,000 residents there was no public health risk stating, “While it is alarming to see pink water coming from your taps, potassium permanganate is used in normal treatment processes to help remove iron and manganese.” Where some residents refused to use the strange coloured water, others were not as fussed. With many transport services refusing to accommodate animals, Case helped fill the void in the market by launching a taxi specifically for pets in April last year.
