A Belgian adventurer has completed the world’s first un-resupplied winter crossing of mainland Tasmania from Penguin, in the state’s north, to the South Cape. Travelling a distance of around 550 kilometres, Louis-Philippe Loncke has been nicknamed the “Mad Belgian”. Emerging from the Tasmanian wilderness with cuts, bruises and weighing 15 kilograms lighter, Loncke endured deep snow, relentless forests and wild lakes during his journey. For the traveller to achieve the world record, Loncke was not able to be re-supplied with any food or gas or use any roads and was to only sleep in his tent. The 41-year-old revealed the most difficult part of the expedition was leaving his tent each day saying, “When it’s raining or snowing you just don’t want to” and added “I obviously made a lot…

China is reportedly in the process of building an “artificial moon” by the year 2020. Anticipated to be eight times brighter than the existing moon, Chinese scientists plan to send three of the creations into the atmosphere over the next four years. The manufactured moons are made from a reflective material similar to a mirror and can illuminate an area with a diameter of between 10 and 80 kilometres. Chairman of Chengdu Aerospace Science and Technology Microelectronics System Research Institute Corporation, Wu Chunfeng, explained the satellites’ “brightness and service time are both adjustable, and the accuracy of the lighting can be controlled within tens of metres.” Mr Wu believes lighting from the man-made moon covering 50 square kilometres in the town of Chengdu could potentially save around $240 million in…

Researchers have discovered how to sustainably grow bricks using human urine. Through a process called ‘microbial induced carbonate precipitation’, the “” combines sand with a bacteria that produces the enzyme urase which breaks down the urea in urine whilst releasing calcium carbonate. When mixed together the result is a brick that is similar to limestone. The key difference, however, is that the strength of the bio-brick can be increased or decreased. Lead research supervisor, Dyllon Randall, explained, “The longer you allow the little bacteria to make the cement, the stronger the product is going to be.” Currently, most bricks made all over the world are created by using kilns heated to 1,400 degrees Celsius which produces excessive amounts of carbon dioxide making the bio-brick much better for the environment.…

In an effort to reduce waste in Japan, old and broken baseball bats are given a second chance in life by being turned into chopsticks. Each baseball season, around 10,000 wooden bats are transformed to reduce rubbish, as well as, help protect a threatened species of ash tree known as the aodamo. Originally, broken bats were burned or given away as sporting mementos until chief executive, Hyogoo Uratani, of the Hyozaemon chopsticks company, convinced local teams to recycle their bats. The deal is mutually beneficial with Hyozaemon contributing a licensing fee to the baseball teams and the Nippon Professional Baseball organisation donating money to the Aodamo Preservation Society. An entrepreneurial teenager has invented a selection of guilt-free treats that help clean your teeth. Alina Morse’s sugar-free Zollipops use sweeteners erythritol and xylitol to reduce acidity in the mouth and protect against cavities whilst also being gluten-free, non genetically modified, vegan, dairy free and organic. At nine-years-old, Morse developed a healthier type of sweet suggesting that “Consumers are realising there is way too much sugar in their diets but we still want to have treats.” At 13-years-old, Morse became the leading lollipop seller on Amazon with her Zolli products including lollipops, drops and chews in a variety of flavours. A Perth woman has cracked open a giant egg only to find another full-sized egg inside. Blythe Calnan was collecting eggs at Runnymede Farm in Binningup when she came across a special egg explaining, “When I gave it a bit of a rattle I could actually feel something quite solid inside, so that’s when I first realised something was quite different.” Editor of the Australasian Poultry magazine, Meg Miller , confessed she had never seen a double egg and said the phenomenon is, “quite recognised but it’s not common.” Regardless, there have been several other cases of double egg discoveries across Australia including a farmer in North Queensland who found an egg that weighed 176 grams. The remote working port on the coast of the Dampier Archipelago in Western Australia has only one hill and it is the perfect spot for a billycart race. Since 2016, the billycart derby has revived the close-knit community amongst big and small kids alike. After joining Alison and Jamie Armstrong on a family holiday to the Marble Bar Billycart Grand Prix, Chris Kirkwood was inspired to initiate and implement a similar event hosted in Dampier stating, “We saw how much fun the kids had on the day and how everyone got involved over there in such a small community.” Now, the billycart derby represents an annual event in Dampier with local businesses and the Dampier Community Association adding further support and funding. Recent lower-than-average tides have resulted in sea creatures not often seen by beachgoers being spotted along the Kimberley coastline. Otherwise known as sea potatoes, heart urchins have emerged across Broome’s Cable Beach only to surprise and confuse walkers. Janelle Saffrey revealed in 30 years of walking along the beach, she had never seen a live heart urchin before, saying, “I’m intrigued and amazed. I’ve only ever seen their skeletons. I’ve never seen them live like this...
