A Sydney man has been deemed the winner of a multi-million dollar tropical island resort following a unique raffle that sparked a global frenzy. Joshua from Wollongong purchased only three tickets from the 75,485 sold across 150 countries with the “overwhelmed” winner saying, “What started as a simple click of a news article during my lunch break that piqued my interest has resulted in a life-changing experience that I could only dream of.” Doug and Sally Bietz are the original owners of the 16-bedroom luxury resort on the Micronesian island of Kosrae and offered it up as the grand prize in the historic raffle. An English girl who sneezes over 8,000 times a day has baffled doctors with her mystery condition. When Ira Saxena began sneezing earlier this year, she could not seem to stop. The nine-year-old was reportedly sneezing more than 10 times every minute despite being examined by a local doctor, a specialist and a private clinic. Worried mother, Priya, from Colchester in Essex, explained that her daughter simply, “woke up sneezing. It started slowly but then progressed to become more constant and more violent. The doctors are saying it is possibly an incorrect signal being sent from her brain or a tic... One time I was at a friend’s party and his mum and dad were giving out spot prizes and I won his dad’s worn out jocks. I put them on as a Borat outfit and his mum took a picture and gave it to all my best mates. Then they brought the photos to school and showed it to the girl I like. Australia is following in the footsteps of big cities such as Japan, New York and London by introducing the first capsule hotel to the country. Located on George Street in Sydney’s CBD the Century Capsule hotel is anticipated to feature 72 capsule style bedrooms ranging in size from a single room measuring 120 centimetres wide to the deluxe room at 160 centimetres. Priced between $40 and $60 per night, the cosy capsules will include a LED TV, wi-fi and lighting. Century Capsule will also have communal areas including a self-catering kitchen, breakfast bar, lounge, bathrooms and a roof terrace. A new robot has been launched that has the ability to construct an entire house in just two days, without needing a tea break. Hadrian X, the giant truck-mounted robot, can lay up to 1,000 bricks per hour using a 30-metre-long arm, known as a telescopic boom. The high-tech robot builder uses the arm to arrange and secure bricks with construction glue rather than cement and is smart enough to leave spaces in the brickwork to accommodate wiring and plumbing. Australian firm, Fastbrick Robotics, are the inventors behind Hadrian X with founder, Mark Pivac stating, “People have been laying bricks for about 6,000 years and ever since the industrial revolution, they have tried to automate the bricklaying process. A German football arena welcomed more than 7,500 classical musicians who performed to break the world record for the biggest-ever orchestra. Hosted in Frankfurt’s Commerzbank Arena, 7,548 musicians belonging to amateur groups and full orchestras from Germany, Austria and the Netherlands participated in the Guinness Book of Records attempt. The previous record was set in 2013 in Brisbane, Australia, with 7,224 musicians playing together for at least five minutes. Jens Illemann, a musician and the main organiser of the recent event, said, “We wanted to show how music can connect people, and how important it is for Germany.” The giant orchestra performed pieces from symphonies by Dvorak and Beethoven, a melody from the “Starlight Express” musical and a pop song by John Miles, “Music (Was My First Love)”. A self-proclaimed animal whisperer claims to have the ability to understand the different emotions and mannerisms of donkeys. Owner of company, “Real Donkeys”, Mark Ineson, from Dewsbury in West Yorkshire, has studied the animals for over 20 years and recently teamed up with Merlin Events, an entertainment group, to offer donkey rides with a twist. Visitors to London’s Jubilee Gardens can engage with technology allowing them to hear donkey sounds translated into English. A spokeswoman from Merlin Events, Chloe Couchman, explained that the technology behind the donkey translators analyses the various sounds, frequencies and vibrations of each donkey’s “eeaww” which then triggers a phrase reflecting what the donkey is supposedly feeling. An Indian woman named Swetha Suresh has walked away with two first prizes in this year’s World Whistling Convention. Held at Kawasaki in Japan, there were 50 contestants hailing from six countries participating in the event including, Japan, Australia, Korea and Venezuela. Within the Indian Whistling Association, Swetha is well-known as the ‘Whistling Queen’ and now stands as the first female whistler in the country to win the accolade, as well as, securing the number one position in the Asian whistling community. A British firm has invented a perfume believed to replicate the scent of the surface of a comet, however , it turns out that comets smell like rotten eggs, cat urine and bitter almonds. Samples of the aroma called 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko have been circling groups of London scientists with Jacob Aron, from New Scientist, confessing, “I almost feel the smell as a physical presence inside my skull. The full heft of 67P’s bouquet hits me in the face. Surprisingly, it’s not actually as foul as my first impression led me to believe - somehow a few fl oral notes are now coming through.” The strange scent was commissioned by Colin Snodgrass from the Open University in Milton Keynes, and was produced by The Aroma Company.
