For someone with an innate design ethos, starting small is not a problem. When interior designer Sophie Ashby bought this very compact but distinctive apartment off-plan four years ago, she had a clear idea of the end result. ‘We were one of the first to move in early last year and I’d already planned it all out,’ she says. ‘Once we had the keys everything was installed in days.’ This is Sophie’s first owned home, bought when her interiors practice was just beginning. ‘I wanted to get on the property ladder,’ she reveals, ‘but I didn’t have the three years’ accounts you need for a mortgage. Once you’ve decided on a palette, it makes selecting everything from the headboard and armchairs to lampshades and curtains a less daunting process. 2 Next, focus on the layout of the room and consider how to make the most of any quirks. Our home is a private place where we like to keep it simple, surrounding ourselves with objects and art that matter to us in an important way. Things that remind us of someone or something,’ says Jannicke Kråkvik, surveying the warm grey textures, the ashy wood finishes and the carefully curated ceramics that make up her central Oslo apartment. I love to have fabric-lined walls in my bedroom, mainly because they make the space feel tailored as well as cosy. There are several ways of doing this, but if you’re buying your fabric from a specialist, ask them to paper-back it so it’s easy to apply to a wall. If you have a fabric you love – for me, it usually has a beautiful pattern or a strong weave – use it on the headboard behind the bed. You can then match it to your valance, so that it makes sense in the space. On a practical note, both headboards and valances can get marked easily so always look for a durable fabric. Bethany Perry trained as an illustrator and then as a make-up artist before adding fine art to her repertoire. She now produces bold and energetic paintings that focus on the female form, and is one of a curated group of artists featured on the internet-based Runway Gallery.
