The relationship between fashion and interiors is something we explore every month in our News and Trend pages (see the Paint Splash report on page 34), but often our bigger shoots are influenced by historical references, new directions in colour and pattern, or simply a show-stopping piece of furniture that becomes a starting point for a theme. Of course, many fashion trends can be interpreted for the home quite easily – think animal print, colour blocking or velvet. However, it was with some trepidation that we decided to do a story inspired by one of fashion’s hottest looks (though not an obvious interiors trend) – sports luxe. But the feature soon took shape as we explored jersey fabrics, coloured netting, gymnasium-tan leathers and curvaceous, stretched silhouettes. See the runway-worthy results…

Opulent and utterly luxurious, there’s only one fabric dominating the trend lists for autumn/winter 2016 – velvet. Once reserved for royalty and the upper echelons of society, it’s now within reach of us mere mortals and a good thing too, as there’s no avoiding it. Emporio Armani, Lanvin, Miu Miu, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Stella McCartney, Valentino… almost every catwalk was draped in a soft layer in sumptuous tones. Indoors is no less luxe, with the textile turning everything in the house into something strokable. Go for jewel-like tones on unusual objects for added impact – Next Home’s crushed-velvet shade brings drama to the ceiling, while Urban Outfitters’ record player will make your jazz sound even smoother.…

HOME PROFILE THE OWNER Italian architect and designer Paola Navone. THE PROPERTY A split-level apartment in Milan, located on the top floor and mezzanine of an industrial building. There’s a living room, kitchen, master bedroom with en suite and walk-in wardrobe and WC on the ground floor. Housed in the mezzanine is a guest bedroom suite, dining room and library. Large terraces wrap around two sides of the apartment, while Paola’s design studio occupies the floor below. Staffan and Monique Tollgård first met while working on a film set – Staffan as first assistant director, Monique as an actress, before both decided to retrain in interior design. Establishing Staffan Tollgård in 2005, they now operate out of a stunning design store-meets-studio space in London’s Pimlico, working on large-scale domestic renovations in the city as well as further afield in Switzerland and California. Put on your overalls – things are about to get messy. For autumn/winter 2016, designers have been painting outside of the lines, with colour being dripped and flicked in every direction. The catwalk was splattered in bright, uneven blotches, with Christopher Kane’s models daubed in inky, clashing tones (and protective headgear) and Diane von Furstenberg’s runway laying on the brushstrokes. Homeware’s getting arty too – Rockett St George’s Rainbow hanging shade takes the canvas painting from the wall to the ceiling, while Damien Hirst’s unique Spin chair looks like it needs a ‘wet paint’ sign. It’s not a trick of the light that makes you look twice at this neutral backdrop. The delicate texture and intricate pattern of Anaglypta wallpaper bring a decorative flourish to the classic plain white wall, moving it firmly out of the shadows. Anaglypta means ‘raised cameo’ in Greek carving techniques. Made from wood pulp and cotton, it was invented in the late 19th century as a lighter, more affordable alternative to the then popular embossed wallpaper Lincrusta.
