By the time you read this, I’ll have just got back from a trip to the American desert, which will include a couple of days in Palm Springs visiting the interior designers Azar Fattahi and Lia McNairy of LALA Reimagined. I won’t get to see the Malibu house they designed that appears on this month’s cover, and from page 38, but I’ll be staying at another one of their projects and they’ve promised an itinerary full of brilliantly ridiculous, relaxedly fabulous and welcomingly glamorous martini moments. I’ve interviewed Azar and Lia a few times over the years and featured their work in Livingetc a lot. What has drawn me to these two creatives is that their designs always look martini-ready, like you could have a really good cocktail in them…

ART FORM Look around and you’ll start to notice it everywhere: furniture, more and more, is becoming like art. Designers are embracing the sculptural pieces that are more covetable than ever, and even high-street and mass-market retailers are in on the trend. if ever a front door was a statement of intent, this is it. Gary Li had the opportunity to oversee the design and build of his own home, so it was about more than a fresh lick of paint and a new door knocker. Here the entrance stands more than seven metres tall, with the door itself rotating on a simple central pivot, all flanked by two vertical concrete fins set into glass. Colour in interiors is rarely so neatly presented, yet here we are being handed precise, geometric cut-outs of it on a platter. A piece of cobalt anyone? A slice of burgundy? Paired with such a bright, almost forceful white, the hues seem similarly stark, the highly defined edges in the curves of the electric orange chair, the lines of the yellow stool (see it?) and the segmented colourful sections of the rug, as well as the painted surfaces making them seem like elements of the room that could be taken away, swapped in or out like pieces of a puzzle, at a moment’s notice. PAPER ROUTE You don’t often see kitchen companies branching out into other areas of design – but then, deVOL isn’t your ordinary kitchen company. The brand has been crafting lighting, furniture and accessories alongside its beloved Shaker-style kitchens for a long time now, but 2025 marks a first: its debut wallpaper launch. It’s perfectly pitched for this room, its subtle pattern – inspired by a historical American wallpaper discovered in a New England house – adding detail and charm without overwhelming an already very busy part of the home. Detailed finishes can add sophistication and character to your kitchen, making it feel more thoughtful in its design. And that goes for worktop edges, too. ‘Counter edges are an often-overlooked detail, but they have the power to transform a space,’ explains Houston-based interior designer Marie Flanigan. ‘These details add depth and intentionality, turning countertops into statement pieces.’ For interior designer Shona McElroy, of Australian design firm Smac Studio, a decorative worktop edge acts as a way to bring ‘softness and an ode to tradition’ into her designs. ‘In designs that verge on traditional, I think these are a really great way to elevate,’ she says. PLAYFUL PIECES I first saw a piece of Katie Moore’s work in McCully & Crane, the Rye-based gallery that I’ve always admired for its brilliant curation. It was one of her conical vessels, and I was really drawn to its outline, how playful its form was. I felt like she was being really experimental and free with its shape, and the effect was gorgeous. I didn’t buy it, though I was tempted, but I made a note to use something by her in the right space at the right time. It didn’t take long. One of her vases was perfect for a project we did in the Barbican. Our brief was to soften the building’s famous hard edges and brutalist lines, and the study of this apartment was particularly dark…

BIG DATE This year marks the 25th anniversary of Armani/Casa and, to celebrate, the brand had a plethora of new launches to admire at Milan. We had a sneak preview of one of them – the Vivace armchair – before things kicked off, and could tell it was something special from the first-look images alone. Crafted from curved wood with upholstery in a silk fabric with an embroidered geometric motif, the chair is oh-so elegant. Its sand and silver tones are offset perfectly by a bamboo-effect frame in a light satin brass finish. Glimpsing the two wings of the Butterfly chair poking out over the top of a solid wood dining table is such an iconic view,’ says Henry Tadros, chairman of the heritage British brand Ercol. ‘It’s inviting.’ Inviting and instantly recognisable as the chair originally designed by Henry’s great-grandfather Lucian Ercolani in the early 1950s. He was making furniture in answer to the post-war timber rationing mood of utility, inspired by other mid-century greats like his friend Jack Pritchard of Isokon (whose use of bent plywood informed the Butterfly), and creating in a time just before Fritz Hansen brought Scandi style into the greater consciousness. ‘He was very forward-thinking, bringing in colours like a black under framed version of the Butterfly, which was very revolutionary,’ Henry says. In the contemporary design world, hand-painted murals are big news, as big as the walls they’re being used to cover. Q What’s the perfect pink paint and how do I use it? The perfect pink has a yellow base that gives it warmth. Farrow & Ball’s Setting Plaster is so popular, as it goes quite fleshy. We’re moving towards a more subtle way of using it, just on ceilings, with a more muted yellow-beige on the walls. It’s very glowy, and the pink ceiling makes the whole room feel warm. A way to make a statement without the pink dominating the room. We also really love Mylands’ BYR 201 pink, which is a bright and intense but without being too bubblegum or sweet. NEW OUTLOOK Things have changed – plasterwork is not just small, old-school, dust-covered detailing that disappears into the room any more. JAKE GARFIELD Since 2016, print artist Jake Garfield has been carving his own path in the art world. ‘I work across printmaking, drawing and painting: each brings with it a different way of working, a different thought process and a different aesthetic,’ he says. ‘One thing they all share is a colour palette of earthy reds, dusty peaches and deep greens. Aged or antique brass is a finish that has been intentionally distressed using hammers and heat to achieve a time-worn look.
