1 TREAT STAINS Double check your sheet for any stains. I like to treat all stains with a paste made from baking soda, washing-up liquid and water. Scrub the stain with this mixture and an old toothbrush, and let it sit. 2 WASH ALL SHEETS I wash all sheets with regular detergent and a scoop or two of OxiClean. This helps brighten and freshen up the sheets. If you have an extra-dingy sheet, soak it in Oxiclean before washing. 3 LEAVE TO DRY Line dry your sheets in the sun or dry on high in a dryer. Lay freshly dried sheets out flat on a bed to avoid wrinkles and to cool off.…

One of the things that really made me fall in love with quilting was vintage sheets. The colours and patterns that are out there are so pretty. I also love that I have to hunt for them. It makes finding good ones, or even the same pattern in multiple colours, really exciting. When I moved into my first apartment in college, I visited a lot of thrift stores looking for homewares. I noticed that the stores in my area were full of vintage sheets. I was so attracted to the bright colours and bold designs, so I started buying them up. My collection grew very quickly and I ended up opening an online shop to sell fat quarters from the sheets I found. I no longer run a sheet shop,…

PIECING 5IN CHARM BLOCKS 1 You can piece your own Charms in a variety of designs using four- and nine-patch blocks. Use four (4) 2¾in squares or nine (9) 2in squares. Lay the squares out and sew together in rows, then sew the rows together to finish the blocks. 2 Strip piecing is a great way to mix up prints quickly. For a three-strip block, divide your Charms into 2in x 5in pieces. You can cut two strips from each Charm, so three squares will make two matching blocks. 3 If you want to add a fussy-cut element, using strips to frame the motif is an easy way to bring it up to size. Creating is something I love. I love the thrill of standing in the middle of my sewing room, looking at all the fabrics and thinking about the next thing I’m going to make. I love the rush of the creative spark when I see a pattern and I immediately think of ways I could make it my own. Creating is fabulous. But you know what sucks that thrill right out of my body (somewhat like a Dementor out of Harry Potter): comparison. While comparison might steal your joy, it also steals your creativity.
