Tell us about your creative background and how you first got interested in quilting. My childhood was filled with ballet. I loved it for its beautiful forms, music and imagination. I also loved that it combined that beauty with a demanding precision. After high school I studied fashion in San Francisco and eventually opened my own designer maternity boutique. I enjoyed most aspects of having my own business, but choosing the colours and shapes of the clothes was the very best part. When this business floundered after the 2008 recession, I decided to start something new with my latest hobby. USING YOUR TEMPLATES 1 Use the Hexagon Log Cabin Centre template to fussy cut the fabric you would like to feature at the centre of your block (Fig 1). You can use a rotary cutter, or trace around the template and then cut out with scissors. Let’s talk scraps. Love them or hate them, there’s no way around them. They multiply, seemingly overnight, with every project cut into, and sometimes they just plain stress me out. How small is too small? Will I actually use this someday? Should I just throw it out? But isn’t that a waste? I’ve been quilting for six years now, and it took me the better part of five of those years to finally get a grasp of how to work with scraps. I live in New York City (the city that infamously never sleeps) and I often find myself caught up in the go, go, go mentality. Even when it comes to quilting, I have to remind myself to slow… it… down.
