CUTTING OUT 1 Place your paper template onto the wrong side of your fabric and pin in place. Alternatively you could use a dab of glue to hold the template in place. Cut around the outer edge, leaving approx 1/4in of fabric on all sides. CORNER TACKING 2 Centre one hexagon template on the wrong side of the fabric and fold down the seam allowance on two edges. Pin or clip to hold in place (Fig A). 3 Thread your needle with waste thread. Beginning on the folded corner, going from right to left, push the needle through both flaps of fabric but not the paper. It’s tested our healthcare systems and frontline workers and put a strain on families the world over. It’s only natural that the pandemic would take its toll on our mental health as well. Personally, I’ve been coping with anxiety since I was a small child. I can recall memories from as far back as the age of two, and I honestly can’t remember a time or age when I haven’t dealt with it. Perhaps it’ll come as no surprise, but I’m a rule follower. I like order. I like instructions. I colour within the lines. And yet, I love improv piecing. Because, spoiler alert, improv doesn’t mean anarchy. One of my favourite ways to stretch my improv muscles and explore off the beaten pattern path? Take a classic quilt block and play with colour, scale, randomisation, or whatever which way tickles my fancy: 1 THE NINE-PATCH It’s a great way to let just a little bit loose. Cut a bunch of 2½in squares from a cohesive colour palette, throw in a couple of random colour squares and sew them randomly into nine-patch blocks.
