Inspired by Gracey Larson’s stunning mountain quilt on p38, I’ve found myself thinking of the ‘mountains’ that we climb as quilters. How did you first get into quilting? I learned to quilt at the same time as my mom, when I was about 12. I was always in her sewing room helping her do quilt math and cut fabric pieces. My mom and I never worked from patterns – we just designed and made quilts based on others we’d seen. So I felt very confident starting off as a quilt pattern designer because I’d already done it for so long! I stopped quilting in my late teens and for most of my 20s, but then discovered the modern quilting movement and absolutely fell in love with it again. Use your new templates to speedily cut shapes from strip rolls! You can also cut 2›in strips of fabric in the same way. Stack your strips to cut multiple pieces at the same time to speed things up even more – and with the seam allowance included, you’re good to go!. SQUARE AND HALF-SQUARE TRIANGLE TEMPLATE 1 To cut squares, place the template on a strip of fabric and cut along either side. We all have our favourite patchwork skill, one we’re most comfortable with, the one we excel at. For me, curves tick none of these boxes. Sure, technically I know how to sew curves – I understand the basic mechanics – I even dip my toes into the world of curves at least once a year.
