How did you first get into quilting? I took a class on how to make a zippered pillowcase at a local sewing shop about four years ago. After making a few garments, I decided to try making a quilt because it seemed a lot more carefree and forgiving – and in my case, that turned out to be true! A couple of years later, I began designing my own quilt patterns. 3D ENALISH PAPER PIECINA Become a pro at 3D English Paper Piecing with Kate Webber's simple step-by-step instructions on glue basting, whip stitching and ladder stitching. All you will need to get started are your EPP templates on p79, basting glue, some colourful fabrics and a needle and thread! GLUE BASTING 1 For these decorations, the papers are left in to provide stability for the finished project, so Kate recommends glue basting. ■ Arrange your scraps to give you an idea of how you want them to cover your batting piece. Starting from the centre, place the first two pieces RST on top of your batting. Stitch the pieces together through all the layers, using a ¼in seam. ■ Open your stitched piece out and press well. Quilt as desired over the top of both pieces. Add the next piece, then sew, press and quilt as before. Continue to repeat this process until the scraps completely cover the entire piece of batting. ■ If you have any smaller scraps lying around you would like to use up, you can sew them together to form a larger piece before adding them on to the batting.…

Knotting your thread It’s important to knot your thread securely at the beginning and end, to make sure your seams don’t unravel. As you make your first and last stitch, leave a small loop of thread. Then pass your needle through the loop two times, before pulling the thread tight. You can then snip the thread close to the knot. You should also aim to knot your thread at approximately every 1-2in. Keep stitching after the knot, without snipping your thread. As EPP is more delicate, this ensures that if a thread breaks through wear and tear, you will only have a very short section to mend.…
