If you’re anything like me, you might have been thinking about how we can be a little kinder to the planet while enjoying our beloved craft. We’ve made it our mission this issue to look into eco-friendly options; we’re sewing with selvedges, mixing fabric types and going scrappy to make sure that we’re using all the fabrics we have to hand – old and new! Becca Parker has spoken to four inspiring sewists to find out how we can all be more sustainable quilters, while our columnist Kim Smith Soper spills her tips on how to get rid of unwanted fabric without throwing it away. CUTTING OUT 1 Cut strips of fabric to the desired height of your Dresden blades, and neatly stack. You can use any size up to 6½in, but the intermediate marks can help you line up the ruler along the edges. Place the template on the strips, and cut along both sides (Fig A). 2 Turn the template, aligning it with the angled edge of the strip (Fig B). Cut along the right side to cut the next piece. Our experts shared a few valuable hacks you’ll want to keep in mind when you’re considering your next project. “Embrace frankenbatting – a large piece of batting made from multiple smaller pieces,” suggests Amari. “Use flannel sheets and fleece blankets for batting or quilt backs.” Batting scraps, as well as fabric scraps, are something you can call on your community for. Check in with quilt friends, both in person and online, and see what other materials you could swap, share or give. Think local too. Second-hand and vintage stores in your neighbourhood could have just what you need. 1 Pin more than you usually would Even if you never usually use pins, it’s helpful to add a few where seams meet, as well as in between. Fabrics like velvet, linen and flannel have more ‘give’ than quilting cotton, which means they’re more likely to shift or stretch when sewing. 2 Use a walking foot for piecing Although we usually use a walking foot for quilting, you might find it handy for piecing in this project too. The walking foot makes sure the layers move at the same speed, preventing shifting as they move under the foot. 3 Use a heavier sewing machine needle Using a thicker sewing machine needle makes it much easier to get through thicker fabrics and seams. BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO: QUILT-AS-YOU-GO WITH SELVEDGES Selvedges are created at the edges of a fabric when the warp and weft threads are woven together. The weft threads have loops at either side, creating the finished selvedge. These loops mean that the fabric will not fray along the edge, as there are no loose threads. You can increasingly find fabrics featuring beautiful designs along the selvedge, incorporating sayings or little illustrations. They can often feel too precious to throw away, so why not save them up until you have a collection to use in a project such as this one? There is always a nagging feeling that we could do something with it. And throwing away usable items is not an option (after all, sustainability is the goal, right?). When asked what one positive change was that quilters could make, our experts were unanimous: buy less and use what you have before buying new It’s no secret that textile waste is one of the heaviest burdens facing our world right now. In fact, according to sustainability NGO WRAP, an estimated £140m worth of clothing is sent to UK landfill each year. That’s mind-blowing. And it’s a cause for concern across the pond, too. A twin needle, also called a double needle, is essentially two needles attached to a single shank, which produces two parallel lines of straight stitches on top and a zigzag stitch from the bobbin underneath. If your domestic machine can sew a straight stitch and a zigzag stitch, then it is likely compatible with a twin needle (straight-stitch-only machines are not).
