How did you first get into quilting? Would you believe it was a combination of zipper pouches and being pregnant with my second child? I had been making and selling one-of-a-kind patchwork style zipper pouches – they’re fun, small projects that are relatively quick to make. A friend planted a seed and randomly asked if I’d ever considered making quilts. A year or two later, when I was pregnant with my second daughter, I really wanted her to have her own quilt. Store-bought ones weren’t special enough and commissioning one was not in the budget, so I decided to try my hand at making one myself! It was a super simple rainbow-inspired baby quilt that she still uses to this day and I’ve been in love with the process of…

In a world full of deadlines and to-do lists, it’s important to make time for ourselves. As quilters, we can look to our craft to fill up our cups and replenish our energy so that we have more to give to the world. We can also incorporate small practices into our creative time to make it feel more special and restorative. WHAT IS SELF-CARE? Self-care means taking the time to do something you enjoy, like quilting, to support your own emotional, physical, or mental health. It can also mean treating ourselves to a reward when we keep promises to ourselves. How did you first get into quilting? In 2017, my daughter Lucy started attending preschool at a church in our neighbourhood. Once a month, the Santa Monica Quilt Guild would hold their meetings at the same church. I had no idea what the guild was or what they were doing, but the vibrant stacks of fluffy quilts (and the bountiful spread of homemade snacks and refreshments) always got me peeking in the door when I picked up my daughter. After I’d poked my head in a few times, the guild members insisted I come in and stay. Next thing I knew, I was a member of the Santa Monica Quilt Guild, despite never having made a quilt before. BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO: VISIBLE MENDING We’re all trying to be a little more conscious about how we reuse and mend what we have, so this issue we’re looking at four options for mending holes and tears. Paula has chosen two hand stitching methods and two methods which can be completed with a sewing machine. For all these stitches, you may prefer to stabilise the tear or hole first. This can be done by: ■ Using an iron-on woven interfacing. Pop a piece, shiny side up, between the batting and the top layer where the tear is. Try and cover as much of the interfacing with the fabric as you can and then press, using a pressing cloth. Be aware that if there is still some interfacing showing, it may…
