BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO: QST AND SPLITQST UNITS Both Quarter-square Triangles (QST) and Split-quarter-square Triangles (Split-QST) begin with Half-square Triangles. These are relatively easy blocks to add to your skillset and you can get some stunning results using them. QST AND QST VARIATIONS You can prepare your Half-square Triangles in any way you choose. For this example we will use the two-at-a-time method to make HSTs, that can be used to make 6in finished (6½in unfinished) QSTs and Split-QSTs. See the chart for other sizes. 1 Pair two 7½in starting squares of contrasting fabrics and pin RST. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of one of the paired squares (Fig A). Tell us a little about how you first started on your fabric design journey. I learned how to screen print in 2008, and printed on paper for a couple of years. But I found from exhibiting at craft fairs that selling prints on paper was a hard proposition – buyers had to buy a frame and figure out where to hang the print. After a few people asked me if my work was available on tea towels and bags – items that they could use immediately – I decided to learn how to print on fabric. I didn’t sell my fabric directly, because printing fabric by hand is such a labour-intensive process that individual pieces would be more expensive than most people are willing to pay.
