This technique works brilliantly with print scraps you’ve been saving up or with a themed bundle of fabrics for a more cohesive look – just use what you’ve got to hand! HOW TO FUSSY CUT FOR EPP MAKING A TEMPLATE Template plastic sheets can be bought relatively cheaply, or you can repurpose an old plastic folder or some plastic packaging. Hand appliqué can be a bit like Marmite. You likely either love the gentle, mindful sensation of each hand stitch, or loathe the slow progress and lack of machine. With Team LP&Q fully in camp ‘Love’, we’ve pulled together some of our top tips to give any apprehensive relationship with the technique a little helping hand. 1 Use the right needles First things first! To a sewing novice, a needle is a needle. To a stitching pro, it’s an extension of your hand. You can use any needle you have that makes small, invisible stitches, but we love using a straw/milliners needle for hand appliqué. When thinking about the topic of "Why I quilt", there's one thing that really stands out. I’m now primarily creating using quilting, instead of continuing with my previous mediums of photography, web design and knitting. With my typical process of designing digitally before cutting into fabric, I could stop right away with a JPG or have it printed on paper, yet that’s not enough. I want the extra step of physically cutting fabric apart and sewing it back together. In the end, you have a three-dimensional object that uses additional senses to appreciate it. I’ve been finding that converting a digital design to fabric brings me the challenges that keep me going, even beyond the moments of tedium, stress, delight and boredom.
