ABOUT YOUR TEMPLATES Drunkard’s Path blocks are made from two pieces, and your template set includes both. Template A is the quarter circle section, and Template B is the arc section of the block. This template set will produce a 3½in square unit, with a finished size of 3in square once sewn into a quilt. The dashed line on the template is a reference for the ¼in seam allowance and can help with alignment if you are fussy cutting any pieces. The three dots along each of the curves can be marked on your cut pieces to help you line up the pieces for sewing. Tell us about your sewing origin story. I started sewing when I was 10 years old, when my mum and I made some curtains for our home on an old hand cranked Singer sewing machine. Unfortunately when I was at school, one of my teachers told me that I couldn’t sew because I was a boy. This stopped me from sewing until I became an older teenager. I then gathered the courage to go to college to study textiles, despite what others had said in the past. Sadly my mother passed away during my studies so I wasn’t able to carry on. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties that I had this burning urge to become a designer. So I went to study a foundation course at college,…

At the Faith Ringgold exhibit Gwen and I are mesmerised. We whisper to one another like we’re in the library. ‘Did you see…? Do you think she…? How did she…?’ The quilts have us stepping close and backing up in tandem, like two little birds at the edge of the water. I have a favourite and Gwen can’t choose. We keep on ping-ponging back and forth between reverent and delighted, uttering little gasps and oohs that I’m sure the museum workers have heard falling out of the mouths of many quilters entering this space. Facing is a type of binding that doesn’t show on the front of the quilt. It is commonly used on wall hangings, art quilts and some show quilts. Quilt facing is similar to a normal binding but as it doesn’t show on the front it can allow for the design of the quilt to run to the edges of the quilt. NOTES ON PREPARATION The fabric used as the binding does not need to match the front or the back of the quilt as it will not be seen. Paula usually matches the facing to the quilt backing fabric, however it can be anything, so great for attacking that scrap pile.
