Even if sports typically aren’t your thing, Gasketball is one funky space jam fest you don’t want to pass up on. Beyond a catchy title and a quirky robot buddy that offers good-natured assistance, this upbeat hoops-meets-puzzle game delivers a slam dunk in the trick shot department. Taking shots and scoring baskets is the order of the day here, but the way you go about getting the ball into the hoop is a far cry from the norm. Focus is the kind of app we never thought we needed, but once we started using it, we had a lot of fun. Functionally, Focus is pretty simple. The app allows you to crop photos, adjust the focal point of photos by blurring details, and adjust color vividness. Though Focus features only these few functions, it performs them well. Coppertino definitely got the details right. For one thing, this app is fast. Even on an older MacBook Pro, Focus opens raw images from our DSLR instantly. It also integrates well with iCloud, and lets you make adjustments using gestures on a laptop’s trackpad or a Magic Trackpad. And Focus’s clean interface is well designed and looks great. Smooth talking Skype is great for communicating with friends and colleagues in other places, but let’s face it: that spacey, hollow sound you get from your Mac’s built-in mic could use some improvement. It’ll be interesting to see where LaCie takes its product line now that Seagate has acquired the company. Our advice? Don’t mess with the Rugged series of hard drives and flash drives. The LaCie Rugged Hard Disk is still the go-to product for extremists, but now the RuggedKey lets you take your data anywhere and keep it secure without the bulk of a hard drive enclosure. Clearly, LaCie combined its two best products, borrowing the orange rubber aesthetic from the Rugged hard drives, and the actual USB key is almost identical to the discontinued IamaKey flash drive. God simulators can sometimes bring out the worst in people, but Babel Rising doesn’t even bother with the concept of mercy; you’re just some omnipotent jerk. But even the sadistic pleasure of crushing villagers can’t rescue the game from mediocrity. Babel Rising has—at least at its core—a marginally biblical theme. Builders and priests are attempting to construct a giant tower, and as a clearly vengeful god, it’s your job to stop the ascent. The single-player campaign contains 15 stages based on three different tower types. Thwarting the progress of a consistent stream of villagers requires the use of elemental powers based on fire, earth, wind, and water. AirParrot brings one of the best new features of Mountain Lion to older Macs: AirPlay Mirroring. We gave the app a try on our 2.8GHz Core 2 Duo Unibody MacBook from early 2009, and color us impressed—it worked like a dream. AirParrot installs quickly, requiring a few drivers and a restart. First introduced in 1975, the Steadicam launched a film industry revolution by freeing camera operators to shoot moving footage without traditional dolly and tracks. While Game Center on Mac has yet to really offer a bounty of great games, Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy is the first big title to take advantage of cross-play between Mac OS X and iOS devices. Surprisingly, the transition to a keyboard-centric control setup feels less comfortable than the touchscreen interface, but Air Supremacy is still a stellar aerial combat game with excellent online multiplayer. The single-player campaign of Air Supremacy tasks you with blasting enemies out of the sky, land, and sea using homing missiles and machine gun fire. While the actual objectives and gameplay of each mission entertain, the story is a convoluted mess, told through comic book–style pages. Everyone, from the most serious business user to the biggest Netflix junkie, needs to stand the iPad up sometimes. A dedicated stand, like the übercool Fixie from Incipio, provides more stability than a Smart Cover, but be forewarned that your relationship with it might hit a few snags in the beginning. The Fixie is made of aircraft grade aluminum, which is a fancy way of saying it’s rugged and lightweight. The Internet is an endless trove of creative content, but the catch is that it’s only available when you’re connected to the Internet. If you know your way around your browser’s advanced settings, you may be able to download a piece of content for offline viewing, but Jaksta Music Miner makes it incredibly easy to grab both audio and video from the web. The developers make it very clear that their program “isn’t intended for use in circumventing copy protection mechanisms or for making illegal copies of copyrighted content,” and in fact, if media you’re watching is protected by DRM, Jaksta will not touch it. We’re all used to the Finder—it’s what makes a Mac a Mac—and we appreciate its features while bemoaning its failings. And while we do that, developers write Finder replacements like Disk Order. Just like Finder windows, the Disk Order interface has a customizable sidebar, but that’s where the similarities end. Disk Order’s side-by-side view makes it easy to check the contents of two folders at once. Developer LikeMac Group takes great pride in stating that you can do everything via keyboard shortcuts, but this isn’t unique: the Finder has always been extremely keyboard-friendly. Combining a clean and responsive interface with everything you’d expect from a stellar client (sans push notifications), Slices emphasizes the discovery aspect of Twitter with its extra functionality. The two big features here are Explore and slices. You can browse by category in the Explore menu, looking through influential users and relevant tweets in 21 areas, including Live Events. An oddly-named tile-matching and dungeon-crawling romp, 10000000 walks a well-worn path, but the result is a reliable, crisp experience that feels more like a comfortable reunion than a thrilling new adventure. Lining up three or more like tiles performs an action at the top of the screen, whether it’s attacking or bypassing a lock, and the further you progress, the higher the score. Earn the titular number of points and you’re free from the dungeon. The game moves at a brisk pace, with runs typically lasting for only a minute, and almost nonexistent downtime. Once you get used to having a backlit keyboard, going back to a regular, non-illuminated keyboard can feel downright primitive. Apple introduced keyboard backlighting with the 17-inch PowerBook G4 in 2003, kept that feature in the MacBook Pro in 2006, and brought it to the MacBook Air in 2011. But Apple has never sold an external backlit keyboard for using an iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, or closed MacBook in the dark. The idea behind GMX-PhotoPainter is to transform your digital photos into vivid, artistic paintings. The app provides an array of fine-art-inspired brushes, mimicking the effects of oils, pastels, crayons, and pen and ink, and you can layer these brushes over a photo to create a unique work of art. Brushes work in a variety of modes, from automatic to user controlled, and they pick up color from the underlying photo, while you control how much of the original photo you want to see through the paint. Sounds great, if it wasn’t so hard to use—even after spending lots of time with the app, we still weren’t able to really master the toolset. PDF is a great format: it allows you to preserve a document’s layout precisely when sharing it with others. The major downside, of course, is that you can’t really modify said PDF once it’s been created. You can open it, print it, even copy text from it, but should you wish to modify it, you have to go back to the original document and create a new PDF from there. Of course, Adobe, the originator of the PDF format, lets you edit PDFs and even create interactive PDF forms with Acrobat Pro—but it’s $449, which is out of reach for most people.
