Considering the fanfare when Apple introduced the glossy black Mac Pro in 2013, the most expensive range of Macs has seemed a little forgotten ever since. Apple recently boosted its most expensive Mac’s specifications for the first time since its introduction. The $2,999 entry-level model now features a six-core Xeon processor and dual AMD D500 graphics cards, up from its 2013 incarnation’s four cores and G300 cards. The more expensive version now comes with an eight-core processor and dual D700 graphics cards, up from a sixcore CPU and D500 cards before. However, the Mac Pro’s design is unchanged, and many of its other specifications look behind the curve when compared to recent portable models. TIME MACHINE is the built-in backup utility of macOS. When paired with an external drive, it automatically backs up every file on your Mac. These backups are incremental, meaning that only files changed since Time Machine was last run are saved. This avoids unnecessary duplication of data on the external drive but also means your very first backup may take several hours, as every file needs to be copied. Space permitting, backups are run hourly, and these are then amalgamated into a daily backup which is stored for a month. Daily backups are then collected into weekly backups for the previous month. A TYPICAL video file is made up of multiple components: the file itself (known as the container), plus its content in the form of its video and audio streams. It’s possible to mix and match these to the extent that two seemingly identical files with the same file extension behave in different ways – as in, one will play but the other won’t. These days, the safest solution is to ensure all your video files conform to a standard that will work across all your devices. WHEN A DEVICE is signed in to iCloud using your Apple ID, certain data, such as calendars and contacts, is kept in sync between the device and Apple’s servers. You can use this to keep data consistent across all your devices. With the advent of iCloud Drive, you can store files in a similar way. Your iCloud account comes with 5GB of free storage, which you can increase by paying a small monthly subscription (see “iCloud Storage” opposite). Once iCloud Drive is enabled, any files stored there are uploaded to Apple’s servers. In addition, you can configure your storage so that any files saved to your Desktop and Documents folders are also stored in iCloud. If you decide to use an AirPort Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme to back up, setting it up is slightly different to using a drive which is directly attached to your Mac. You’ll need to use a network cable to connect your Time Capsule’s WAN port (its icon resembles a circle of dots) to your router. You can now open AirPort Utility, which is found in /Applications/Utilities. Your Time Capsule should appear in that app’s window: simply click it, then Continue to run the setup process. Your first step is to create a Wi-Fi network, or to connect the device to your existing one. By default, cloud services such as Dropbox will only sync files that you put inside their dedicated folder on your Mac. Some folders, such as your Desktop or Pictures, can’t be moved there. You can get around this issue with MacDropAny, a tool which creates a symbolic link between these kinds of folders. Visit zibity.com/macdropany.html and click Download MacDropAny to get started. When choosing RAID storage, ideally find a drive which supports Thunderbolt, as this will make for much faster data access speeds. Most modern RAID drives support both RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (mirroring), but check with the manufacturer to be sure its device supports the latter. RAID devices usually pack multiple disks into one enclosure, as is the case with the WD 4TB My Book Thunderbolt Duo. Check the product specs to see how many physical disks are inside. I buy a lot of HD movies on iTunes. A couple of updates ago you could access a chapter list for scenes in a film. But when iOS 10.2 came to be, the chapter menu disappeared and the only way to move between chapters now is by using the arrows at the bottom of the screen during playback. MACOS RECOVERY IS a set of tools which are hidden until you power on your Mac and hold command+R until you see the Apple logo or a globe. You should only need to use the recovery system in a rare emergency – typically when some drastic glitch unexpectedly prevents macOS from loading at all.
