APPLE’S LATEST ITERATION of macOS, High Sierra, has been rocked by yet another security lapse. This was the most serious yet, potentially giving attackers (human or malware) root access to any Mac running High Sierra — meaning they could do anything they wanted. Apple issued a fix, Security Update 2017-001, within a day after the fault was publicized to the general public on Twitter and widely reported in the media, but this was some weeks after the issue was first disclosed on its developer forums. Ironically, the fix in turn broke file sharing, and Apple rapidly issued an additional support note (support.apple.com/en-us/HT208317) with instructions on how to get it working again. Real Aquarium features five different species swimming in their native environment for your viewing pleasure. The picture quality is pretty decent, but there’s no accompanying sound or music. The videos also loop, so the app soon wears out its welcome. But perhaps Real Aquarium’s biggest limitation is the fish selection. WHEN THE NEW Files app was announced, it sounded like an iOS equivalent of the macOS Finder, enabling you to view and organize all the files on your device. It isn’t quite that. For a start, your files are not all visible in Files unless you add them to the app; you can’t even see your device among the default Locations until you add at least one file to Files. Yes, but keep backups in case you need access in the future. If you’re not using iCloud Keychain, these are stored locally in your login keychain, which opens automatically when you log in. Never tamper with the System or System Roots keychains. In addition to your regular Time Machine or similar backup, make a copy on an external drive of your current login keychain from ~/ Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db, put this somewhere safe, then open Keychain Access. This can occur when you convert old iPhotos libraries, when another app has tampered with the library, or because of bugs, but it’s most common when you use Copy and Paste to add new images to the library, instead of importing them. Ensure you have a backup of the library, so if anything goes wrong you can revert to it. Remove images with garbled names, and import them from the originals to preserve names and other information. If that isn’t feasible, edit the information about each image to add names and other details. If neither of these strategies works, suspect a problem in that library, and repair it.
