ESR is among the first batch of forward-thinking companies to update all its charging solutions to the 15W Qi2 standard. Its first update was to the popular 3-in-1 Wireless Charging Set, which was first available as a 7.5W MagSafe-compatible charger and then as a 15W Qi2 version. It works with all iPhones since the iPhone 12 except the iPhone SE and iPhone 16e. The company has now refined its Qi2 3-in-1 charger with a cooling technology it calls CryoBoost. In fact, this is the second generation of CryoBoost, which seeks to solve the biggest efficiency blocker in wireless charging: heat. We’ve tested so many cloud-based storage services for your Mac that our heads are starting to spin, and Sync.com is easily one of the most no-nonsense options. Its Mac app is basic, but its focus on security makes it arguably best for enterprise users. That’s thanks to end-to-end encryption, something not offered by many rivals, while its Vault function lets you keep files in the cloud that aren’t synced across devices, too. Every time I review a product that features hard disk drives (HDDs), I sing the same tune: lots of capacity for a lot less than SSDs, and better performance than you might think. I wouldn’t want to run my operating system off a box like the Glyph Blackbox Pro RAID (HDDs offers slothful random access), but I’d certainly use it for audio or video production where sequential transfer speed is paramount. 550MBps in RAID 0 will easily do the trick in most scenarios. THE HDD VERSUS SSD CONUNDRUM But there’s a caveat: The striped RAID 0 that delivers that 550MBps offers no redundancy. Apple Arcade is one of Apple’s more opaque services. The company doesn’t disclose any subscription figures and keeps other key data under wraps. Occasionally, specialist media manage to glean a few insights by interviewing a developer in a forthcoming mood, but most of the time we’re kept in the dark. Is it a success? Is it a failure? LayerX Labs on Tuesday posted its finding on a new phishing attack that originally targeted Windows users but now can be found on Macs. The phishing attack attempts to get a user’s username and password by making the user think their Mac is compromised. The attack involves fake security warnings that appear while browsing the web. Alerts appear stating that the Mac has been “compromised” and “locked,” and the webpage appears frozen to heighten the sense of a compromise. A window appears prompting the user to enter their Mac’s username and password, along with a phone number to contact for “support.” LayerX Labs provided a screenshot of the phishing attempt, though the attackers may modify the alert to make it more convincing. Everyone knows that Apple is playing catch-up when it comes to Apple Intelligence. The company’s shipping AI models seem to be way behind the cutting edge, as OpenAI grows, Google pushes forward, and newcomers hit the scene. Keep your phone in your pocket or backpack, and dust and dirt will certainly enter its most vulnerable point of entry—the charging port. Once enough fluff is in there, you will find it difficult to properly insert the charging cable, and you will have to rely on wireless charging. There are good reasons why Apple’s cheapest tablets, such as the 9th-gen and 10th-gen iPads, have been big sellers. In theory, Apple’s standard iPad models are designed primarily for educational institutions, but in reality, they offer everything most users want. While everyone is waiting to see just how different the iPhone 17 lineup will be, an analyst with a decent track record has a prediction for next year—not one but two folding devices from Apple. While we’ve already heard rumors that a folding phone is nearing release, GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu reports that Apple is planning to launch a 19-inch folding iPad later next year. The Vision Pro has been a flop, plain and simple. By most accounts, it is not even close to meeting Apple’s own meager internal sales expectations. And worse, it is out of the public consciousness entirely—even Apple fans often forget about it. Apple’s Beats brand has a habit of one-upping its parent company with products that are a little less restrictive, a little less one-size-fits-all, and a little more colorful, while still offering the same Apple quality (and indeed, often exactly the same technology). Now there are official Beats charging cables, and honestly, I’ll probably never buy an Apple-branded one again. A single Beats cable costs the same as Apple’s ($19 for a single USB-C to USB-C cable, USB-A to USB-C cable, or USB-C to Lightning cable, and they have the same specs: USB 2.0 data transfer speeds, charging support up to 60W. If you’ve shopped Thunderbolt in your quest for fast external Mac storage, you’ll know that sticker shock is often a pitfall of the process. You can reduce the monetary jolt by switching your search to USB4, which, being an outgrowth of Intel’s PCIe over-a-wire technology, is just as fast as Thunderbolt 4. By now, we’re all familiar with an embarrassing slip-up from the leadership at Apple.
