Apple offers pretty good prices on the standard configurations of its Macs. $599 for an M4 Mac mini? $999 for a new M4 MacBook Air? $1,299 for a new M4 iMac? Those are attractively priced. But those prices involve a few sacrifices, most notably the starting storage of just 256GB. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, 2027 will be a big year for Apple, with a couple of dramatic new iPhone designs, smart glasses, AI servers and Apple Intelligence developments, camera-equipped wearables, and a tabletop robot. But it’s the year after that when we may finally see a product a lot of Apple customers have been asking for. Gurman reported that Apple is working on a “product that will cross a foldable iPad with a touch-screen Mac” that could be revealed in 2028. That’s the only thing Gurman says about the product, but based on past reports, we can piece together what this device is so far. The Corsair EX400U looks like a simple external SSD. It measures 6.4×6.4×1.2 centimeters and has a plastic housing. Underneath, however, is a MagSafe-compatible ring for attaching to an iPhone. It connects via USB-C and can also be used with a Mac. We used Ajax System Test Lite to gauge its speed. Its 2709Mbps for writing and 3165Mbps for reading offer a convincing performance. In the read/write endurance test, the EX400U slows down by around 300Mbps, and the plastic casing also becomes noticeably warm, but not hot. Corsair states that the 2TB model we reviewed has a 500 TBW rating (the number of terabytes it can write over its lifetime); a value of 500 TBW or more indicates an SSD that is suitable for intensive use in video editing. If you just updated to iOS 18.4.1 this week, you may have noticed that Safari on your iPhone or iPad has started showing a list of your recent search queries. The feature was added in iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4, with the goal of making it quick and easy to look for something again (a common occurrence). With summer fast approaching, JBL recently updated several of its portable Bluetooth speakers, but the one that really caught our eye was the rugged and backpack-friendly design of the new Flip 7. Priced at just $149.95/£129.99, and available in a variety of colors, the Flip 7 is clearly a direct competitor for the recently released Beats Pill, but it manages to outdo its Beats rival in a number of ways. For starters, the updated Flip 7 now boasts a seriously rugged IP68 rating for resistance to water and dust—compared to IP67 for the Beats Pill—which allows it to survive complete immersion in 1.5m of water for up to 30 minutes. HOW TO AVOID ACCIDENTALLY PLACING PHOTOS IN THE iCLOUD SHARED PHOTO LIBRARY Apple added the iCloud Shared Photo Library in iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, dramatically improving sharing photos and videos with a group of people with whom you frequently exchange media. The Apple Vision Pro is a perplexing piece of hardware. It’s a technological marvel that stuns the senses, but it lacks the killer app and content needed to overcome the initial cost of investment and awkward ergonomics. I’m fascinated by its potential and was brave enough to hold on to the Vision Pro beyond the return window. When I use it, I am reminded of its unique abilities, such as its Mac Virtual Display feature. A few weeks ago, Apple posted the New Lumon Terminal Pro on its website to promote the season finale of Severance, its hit show on Apple TV+. It’s not a real product, and the product page isn’t on Apple.com anymore (but it lives forever in the Internet Archive). However, what is real is the MDR Dasher Keyboard, a replica of the one Lumon employees use in the show. According to Atomic Keyboard, the MDR Dasher Keyboard is inspired by the Data General Dasher 200, a computer terminal from the 1970s. Since the very first iPhone, Apple has featured an on-off mute switch above the volume buttons. That all changed with the iPhone 15 Pro, and every iPhone since—the mute switch was replaced by something called the Action button. The idea is simple: Instead of a switch, you have a button you press and hold for a second (to avoid accidental presses in your pocket or bag) to mute or unmute your iPhone. I have a confession to make: I am an inveterate Reddit scroller. But my viewing experience of choice isn’t the official Reddit iOS app, but a fantastic third-party client called Apollo. The only problem is, it doesn’t exist in the App Store anymore. And that’s because of playlists. A huge part of the streaming experience is being able to create cross-device playlists of songs for studying, working out, driving, sleeping, parties, and so on. There are ways to take these playlists with you when you move from Spotify to Apple Music, for example, but for many it represents enough of a hassle to keep them with the original service. The Huawei Freeclip is eye-catching in two ways: its elegant, shiny surface and the unusual way they are worn. Unlike conventional open-ear headphones, which either sit in the ear canal or are attached with a headband, they are held directly to the ear with a clip. They work amazingly well. The Freeclip’s secure and comfortable fit is impressive, but since everyone’s ears are different, how they fit will vary from person to person. With the release of the Mac Studio in March, Apple also released its fastest processor ever. However, that chip, the M3 Ultra, is only available in the Mac Studio—it’s not available in the higher-end Mac Pro. Apple’s flagship Mac, once dubbed “the world’s fastest personal computer,” still runs the M2 Ultra chip that was released in 2022. That leaves the Mac Pro as a glaring oddball in its Mac lineup. BenQ’s 27-inch MA270U (reviewed separately) provides a very affordable alternative to Apple’s expensive Studio Display, but its sub-$500 price tag does involve some compromises. In this review, we are looking at the 32-inch MA320U. It is slightly more expensive, at $599.99/£549.99, but as well as providing a larger screen, it also addresses some of the weaknesses of its 27-inch stablemate and produces a brighter display with bolder, crisper colors. Just for the record, though, we should point out that the screen actually measures 31.5 inches when measured diagonally. This is something that was first introduced on Apple’s Pro Display XDR, before coming to other Apple products beginning with the long-discontinued 27-inch iMac. So, what is it, and should you spend hundreds more to have it adorn your screen? WHAT IS NANO-TEXTURE GLASS? Glare is often a problem in brightly lit offices and homes, which can render the large, glossy displays little more than hugely elaborate mirrors. Ever since Apple unveiled its ambitious next-gen CarPlay in-car experience at Worldwide Developers Conference 2023, we’ve been waiting for it to arrive. Nearly two years later, the first models running the new system are finally rolling off the lot—and it finally has a proper name. Apple and Aston Martin announced recently that CarPlay Ultra will be available as a standard feature on all new vehicle orders in the U.S. and Canada, and will be available for existing models that feature Aston Martin’s “next-generation infotainment system” through an upcoming software update.
