To describe the 55th Anniversary Montego Bay International Marlin Tournament as just a good time would be an understatement: The event could be the best dock party I’ve ever experienced. And while I can’t report that the marlin fishing was red-hot, I don’t think many of the participants noticed. Each night, the docks were packed with captains, anglers and crews while boats blared reggae music as loud as possible. People danced and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Did I mention the sound systems on these sport-fishers? The cockpits and bridges could have been an advertisement for JL Audio, and some of the vessels even had separate boxes for subwoofers — one of which I initially mistook as a step box that was left in the cockpit when we departed for the…
editor@marlinmag.com STILL FISHING AT 94 I wanted to share with Marlin a very special day I had today because there are some things in life that are too good to even dream about. Today was one of those days for me, and I thank God to have given me the opportunity to have my father, Paco Saca Sr., on board Sandy-ita one more time. We had a wonderful day with him. It was a short trip, and we did not go far offshore, but it was a blessing to have him on the boat one more time and to see him reel in a skipjack — way better than catching a grander. And yup, he just turned 94! He was diagnosed with lymphoma a couple of months ago at MD…

Austin Angel stands ready for a bite in the cockpit. He’s won an impressive number of top angler awards in tournaments from Costa Rica to Mexico, and yet he remains just as excited about the next fish as he was for his very first one. When the tournament’s on the line, Austin Angel is a good choice to be on the rod. From 2011 through 2015, he was the top angler during at least one leg of the highly competitive Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown in Costa Rica, and in 2015, he was the overall top angler for the three-tournament series. As part of the Sea Angel team, he’s won high-profile tournaments from Costa Rica to Mexico, with his brother B.C. Angel as captain of the family’s 63-foot F&S, his…
WHERE DECEMBER/JANUARY: As the dry season gets underway in Central America, the spotlight falls on Costa Rica’s Pacific sailfish fishery. Large schools of big sails can be found harassing baitballs beneath frigate birds and around schools of spinner dolphins within 40 miles of the coast. The fishing can be simply phenomenal: Multiple hookups are the norm, and 10 or more sailfish releases a day are not uncommon.…
