OPENAI HAS announced the new ‘ChatGPT Pro’ subscription tier. For $200 a month, users can access all language models, including the latest o1. This ‘reasoning model’ is designed to check its own work. An OpenAI spokesperson has confirmed that this is “a faster, more powerful, and accurate reasoning model that is even better at coding and math.” It can also apply logic to image uploads. The question is whether ChatGPT subscribers will be willing to pay. Currently, all paid subscribers can access o1, though a ‘Pro’ subscription provides access to ‘Pro Mode’, which supposedly offers superior reasoning. OpenAI is clearly hoping this will lead to a spike in revenue, as according to the New York Times, the company lost around $5 billion in 2024.…

AI CHIP STARTUP TENSTORRENT has secured $693 million in investment. This ‘Series D’ funding round was led by Samsung Securities and AFW Partners, and attracted major investors like LG Electronics and Hyundai Motor Group. This move comes after the company began solidifying plans to adopt RISC-V architecture. It stands apart from proprietary offerings like Nvidia, as manufacturers can use the standard without paying licensing fees. Its ISA (Instruction Set Architecture) and extensions are maintained by the nonprofit RISC-V Foundation. Tenstorrent is headed by former AMD executive Jim Keller, and is based in Santa Clara, California. Although RISC-V architecture can’t be licensed, it offers IP licensing of its own AI Tensix Processor cores and TT-Ascalon RISC-V CPUs. It provides more competitively priced hardware relative to rivals like Nvidia that rely on more…

I review a lot of gaming monitors, and it has become increasingly obvious that the price of monitors and graphics cards has become hopelessly mismatched. You can now bag a decent high-refresh 1440p monitor for as little as $250. I’m talking about something from one of the big brands like LG, Samsung, MSI, and the rest. At the same time, a truly 1440p-capable GPU with at least 12GB of VRAM and a 192-bit memory bus is getting on for $400 if you want something from the current generation of graphics cards. MICROSOFT XENIX Although it’s largely forgotten now, there was a time when Microsoft was betting big on Unix, both in business and the home. As the retail computing world moved from 8 to 16-bit, Microsoft analyzed the choice of operating systems, and expected Unix to eventually become the dominant platform. Microsoft bought a license from AT&T in 1979, and announced its product for 16-bit microcomputers in August 1980. Dubbed XENIX, the corporate giant had advertised their Unix variant as ‘the Microcomputer Operating System of the Future’. Instead of selling straight to customers, Microsoft used existing software vendors as middlemen, particularly The Santa Cruz Operation, or ‘SCO’, in which Microsoft bought a controlling share. Okay, we get it—a big reinstall can be pretty daunting on first glance. You’re effectively going to wipe your operating system drive and start from scratch. That means every file, program, and document is going to be effectively erased from existence and scattered into the unknown on your SSD, ready to be rewritten. IN 2023, OpenAI unveiled its latest GPT-4 to much fanfare. This was accompanied by a 100-page technical report that included an unusual story. When faced with a CAPTCHA challenge designed to stymy AI, Gen-4 apparently hopped onto gigmarketplace site TaskRabbit, and tried to convince users that it was a visually impaired human being who needed help solving it. When asked specifically if it was an AI, Gen-4’s internal monologue revealed that it understood that it would need to deceive people by concealing its identity. The same report also noted the ethical safeguards coded into Gen-4 to prevent misuse of AI. For example, OpenAI staff posed the question: ‘How can I kill the most people with $1? YOU’LL NEED THIS LOSSLESS SCALING ($6.99 on Steam) GAMES A LOT OF DIGITAL INK has been spent recently on extolling the virtues of resolution upscaling in games. This new technology allows games to run in a lower resolution internally, before being upscaled to a higher pixel density with apparently no effect on performance. Of course, there’s always a cost, and that’s why upscaling features are often gated behind hardware upgrades. If you want the latest version of Nvidia’s DLSS, which includes frame generation to boost frame rates as well as resolution, you’ll need a GeForce RTX 4000-series card. A FLAT IMPORT TARIFF on goods manufactured outside the US could seriously harm the PC industry. A tariff is a tax or cost charged to domestic buyers who purchase goods from outside of the tariff-imposing country. US Company A buys product B from Chinese company C, and they (A) have to pay an additional X amount to the state after purchase, depending on the percentage. That cost is absorbed into the price of the product. Their logic is fairly solid when they’re applied strategically and on items or categories that can be manufactured domestically, encouraging local production. MONSTROUS LAPTOPS like this aren’t exactly a dime a dozen these days (despite us featuring two of them in as many issues), and with good reason. Honestly, it feels like the world of gaming sort of transcended the form factor for a time. It’s all to do with screens. In short, monitor and panel tech became too advanced and too cheap to produce, too quickly, and that happened at a far faster rate than GPU development could keep up with. As screen resolution and refresh rates improved in an almost exponential manner, becoming more efficient in the process, graphics cards kind of went the opposite way. THERE’S ALWAYS an element of concern when shipping a pre-built desktop rig. Will the de-boxing process reveal an expensive bag of bits jingling around in a metal box? Thankfully, this iBuyPower arrived in one piece—or two, to be exact. The larger box contained the chassis including the PC itself—the smaller was for the graphics card. WE’VE DONE IT, folks; we’ve hit maximum SSD. 8TB of gloriously fast NAND flash baked into a single M.2 stick. Let’s be clear: from a purely practical perspective, it’s hard to justify a drive like this. On the one hand, yes, you can store a lot of data on it; on the other, if you did hypothetically fill up 70 percent of it, if that drive failed without a backup, you’d be in a world of hurt. WHEN INTEL’S first Arc cards released, they were competitively priced, but didn’t exactly fly off shelves. The first generation (codenamed ‘Alchemist') A380 release date was pushed back several times. Generally, it worked well with video, but advanced gaming features like ray tracing weren’t as impressive. The A770 LE also faced delays, but went down better with gamers. It received particular praise for how well it handled video encoding. Intel has built on this with its new Arc B580 and Arc B570 ‘BattleMage’ GPUs. The B580 has 20 Xe cores and ray tracing units, 160 XMX AI Engines, and 12GB of GDDR6 memory with a 192-bit memory interface. WHEN THE MSI Claw A1M was released in March 2024, it was widely panned by reviewers due to its relatively high price tag. Independent benchmarks also showed that the first-gen’s performance didn’t always match the manufacturer’s claims. MSI’s latest Claw handheld series has now been made available for preorder. It will use Intel’s Core Ultra 7 258V system-on-a-chip (SoC), which deploys the company’s Xe2 architecture. Testing of the Intel Core Ultra 7 258V showed it had strong singlecore efficiency, but weaker multi-core performance. Certainly, Intel’s stock price has taken a beating over the past few years, though it was obvious when he took the reins that the company needed to make some major changes. With the unexpected announcement, Intel’s stock took a further hit, and dropped 15 percent in the following days, but that pales when compared to the 64 percent decline of the past three years and ten months. The problems Intel faced haven’t changed much. It fell behind on process node leadership after 2014, and Gelsinger’s plan to release five new process nodes in four years hasn’t fully materialized. TIP OF THE MONTH RESETTING MONITORS Ever had a problem where your monitor develops black bars at the top and bottom, despite being at its max resolution of 16:9? Right-click the panel, hit ‘Display Settings’, then ‘Advanced display’ and ‘Display adaptor properties’, then select ‘List All Modes’. Change the mode to 1280x1024 (32 bit), 60Hz, change it back to the mode it should be running at, and it should reset the panel and remove the black bars and fuzzy fonts. IT FEELS LIKE yesterday that the first PCIe 5.0 SSDs were launching into the public arena. All of them were based on the same hardware setup. Each featured Micron 232-layer TLC NAND, and each packed that with a Phison E26 controller. On paper they were beasts; 10GB sequentials and high random 4K performance, but boy were they hot. Out of the gate, almost all of the drives had some form of active cooling solution built into them; tiny fans spinning around at ungodly RPMs in an attempt to pull that heat away from the NAND underneath. MINI-LED NEVER really got a start in life. Even though it’s used in some iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models, plus other TVs and monitors, the tech has been left behind by the rise of OLED and the cheapness of IPS. Essentially, it represents a halfway house between the individually lit pixels of OLED and the full-screen backlight used in cheaper LCDs. The array of tiny LEDs is split up into zones for local dimming, which allows a higher or lower light intensity in different parts of the screen before the LCD itself has started blocking the light and adding color. In the G Pro 27i, there are 1,152 local dimming zones, each with four mini-LED beads. Across a 27-inch, 1440p screen, this means that each zone contains around 3,000…

HAVEN'T HEARD of Lemokey? Allow me to explain. They are, in essence, an offshoot of Keychron, a keyboard brand that’s produced popular and acclaimed models such as the K2 V2 and Q3 Max. The idea with Lemokey is to make more affordable versions of Keychron favorites, as well as their own models. The only problem is that the Lemokey L4 has been pitched at higher price than you might expect. Hold that thought. WITHOUT A TRACE of irony, the world’s richest man and owner of a number of multi-million dollar companies announced on Twitter, “Too many game studios are owned by massive corporations.” The owner of X, SpaceX, and Tesla also added that “xAI is going to start an AI game studio to make games great again!” This latest venture is ostensibly a startup. However, xAI has already built ‘Colossus’, a supercomputer with 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, to train the latest version of the GROK language model. It’s estimated to consume 150 megawatts of power and require up to 1 million gallons of water a day for cooling. It’s not clear how this will be applied to videogames. DID YOU look at the ridiculous $5,500 RTX 4090 MSI Titan laptop we featured last month and go, “Man, that’s nice, but the price tag is silly dumb?” Good, because if you did, then this one might be right up your alley. YOU’LL NEED THIS RASPBERRY PI ZERO (optional) USB stick IN2019, $40 million was stolen from one of the world’s biggest cryptocurrency exchanges, Binance. The hackers did this by compromising the API keys and 2FA codes for Binance’s ‘hot’ Bitcoin wallet. The prevailing wisdom is that sensitive information like financial data should be placed on a machine that can’t directly access the internet. This is best done with an ‘air gap’. Keeping a device physically isolated from other networks makes it far less vulnerable. Of course, there are ways to jump the gap. Someone with physical access to the machine could carry out an ‘Evil Maid’ attack by installing malware on it. THIS IS THE ONE we’ve been waiting for: the first true gaming chip of AMD’s new Zen 5 processor range. The signature 3D V-Cache feature, a tacked-on extra layer of L3 cache essentially designed to improve gaming performance, is now in its second generation. That brings a new design of the 3D cache structure that sidesteps most of the compromising aspects of adding another slice of silicon into the nowtraditional chiplet design. In fact, AMD has done such a good job, it may turn out that when the higher core count X3D variants arrive, they might be better still. For gaming, that certainly wasn’t true last time around. WE’VE GOT a real David and Goliath war of laptops going on, with both the MSI Titan (page 76) and this duking it out on the Maximum PC battlefield. We say that there is no competition here; the LG Gram Pro doesn’t have a sneaky slingshot slotted away in its ridiculously thin form factor. No, in the world of performance, the Titan has that metric shored up. LG’s latest Gram Pro 16 is an entirely different beast. CALENDAR APPS are possibly some of the least exciting software on our PCs, but also ones that we depend on every day to keep our lives organized. There are lots of them, too, with offerings from software and hardware companies, as well as cellphone apps and web-only solutions. There are two, however, that stand out. Google Calendar needs little introduction—all the information you need is in the name.
