This was the reaction of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and Cosatu, commenting on the recommendations made in the report on the market inquiry into the land-based public passenger transport sector by the Competition Commission. In a report to the government, Commissioner Tembinkosi Bonakele called for an equitable subsidisation of the public transport sector so that it would also benefit the taxi industry. Bonakele said minibus taxis were major players in the public transport system in the country, carrying almost 66.5% of South Africa’s passengers each day. Psychosocial stress – typically resulting from difficulty coping with challenging environments – may work synergistically to put women at higher risk of developing coronary heart disease, a new study suggests. The findings indicate that the effects of job strain and social strain – the negative aspect of social relationships – posed a double risk to women. Together they are associated with a 21% higher risk of developing coronary heart disease. Three suspects were gunned down yesterday during an encounter between terrorists and security forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, the police said. While acknowledging the police and other security forces for showing patience during the operation, the Kashmir range Inspector-General of Police, Vijay Kumar, appealed tothe youth who had joined the terrorists to shun violence and return to mainstream life. DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates has selected the first Arab woman to train as an astronaut, expanding into the space sector to diversify its economy. Nishi Naidoo, the manager of the seaside holiday home for underprivileged children, said the visitors from the iKhaya LikaBaba and Musawekhosi children’s homes stayed for three nights with their caregivers. Naidoo said the children were provided with cooked meals and desserts by the in-house chef. “They were also treated to Easter eggs, fruit, toasted marshmallows over a camp fire and cakes,” she said. The SANDF said that in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic, it had broken records in its efforts to protect the borders, particularly with Zimbabwe and Mozambique. Between January 1 and March 31 this year, contraband valued at over R30 million was confiscated. Stolen vehicles with an estimated value of over R26m were intercepted before illegally crossing the borders. Soldiers in KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape and Free State confiscated narcotics to the value of more than R21m. “All confiscated goods were declared and handed over to the relevant state departments, including the SAPS and South African Revenue Services/Customs.” The SANDF said…

ON April 10, 1993, Chris Hani, then SACP general secretary, member of the ANC national executive committee and former chief of staff of MK was assassinated in front of his home in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni. Lebanon cannot pull itself out of its economic crisis without a new government to transform the country and launch long-stalled reforms, a senior official at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) said. Both a “rude” lawyer and an “obstructive” soon-to-be divorcee received more than a slap on the wrist for their attitudes towards the judges. POLICE have launched an inquest after the death of 22-year-old Anele ’Nellie’ Tembe, whose body was discovered yesterday morning outside the Pepper Club Hotel in the Cape Town CBD.
