Most of South Africa’s landscape (at 91%) falls within the category of drylands, making it highly susceptible to desertification.
This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for effective land management strategies. Land degradation, driven by mining activities, unsustainable land use practices, poor infrastructure development, and the over-exploitation of natural resources, exacerbates food and water insecurity across all nine provinces. Coupled with the impact of drought, these factors are major drivers of migration and socio-economic instability. Hence, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment is calling on all South Africans to join government’s ongoing initiatives to prevent land degradation and promote sustainable land management.
