I quite often ask myself this question. I ask it when I monitor and reflect on my behaviour, replay the day’s conversations and decisions.
I don’t always like an honest reply.
Humane people see, notice, respond to the sufferings of others. Humane people assist as much or as little as they are able. Humane people are kind, merciful, good, gracious, and they are a rare find.
When I am unmoved by the needs of others, indifferent to the needs of others, I give way to my inhumanity. It seems, as I look within and look around, that to be inhuman – cruel, harsh, brutal – is easier, more natural, the default.
If it were not so, hearts of stone would not be two a penny.
I wonder what it takes…
