The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has uncovered non-compliance with the Consumer Protection Act (CPA) in KwaZulu-Natal, revealing retailers selling expired food, mislabelled products, and failing to display prices.
The commission conducted inspections last month in Pinetown, Pietermaritzburg, Durban CBD, Springfield, Inanda, uMlazi, and Westville, working with the South African Police Services and the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications.
The NCC said it inspected food, clothing, and blanket retailers where non-compliant practices to the CPA are prevalent. Inspectors found goods sold after sell-by, use-by, or best-before dates, including meat products. Labelling violations were identified.
“The NCC inspectors uncovered widespread non-compliance regarding product labelling. This includes goods without ingredients, product descriptions, country of origin (in the case of clothing) or altered trade descriptions,” the commission said.
