SCULK Sculk blocks (and all of its variants) can appear in two ways: they generate naturally in patch formations within the deep dark biome, but they can also be created by a sculk catalyst if a mob dies somewhere near it. This effect works in any biome, but the catalysts must be placed manually outside the deep dark biome – they do not generate anywhere else. Sculk blocks cannot be crafted and are used in no crafting recipes. They can only be collected using a Silk Touch-enchanted hoe. Destroying sculk causes it to drop 1 point of experience per block. LILY PAD! ABOUT LILY PADS Lily pads are a type of plant block that spawn in swamps on top of water source blocks. They are dark green and can be stood on by players and mobs similar to dripleaf plants, although unlike dripleaf plants, they won’t ever drop you! The only other place lily pads generate naturally is in the wheat farm rooms of woodland mansions, where they are placed on top of the water to allow easy access to the wheat on either side of the irrigation. COLLECTING LILY PADS You can collect a lily pad by breaking it with any item – they can be broken instantly with any tool or an empty hand and will always drop themselves. PICK A SPOT The first thing you need to do is pick a spot for your maze. Deserts are often a good choice because it’s easy to find large and flat areas – building on flat ground makes it easiest to keep the maze a uniform size and shape. BUILDING THE CENTRE Once you’ve decided on a spot, mark out the central chamber with a single layer of blocks. Not every puzzle has to be a race to the middle, but this is a classic design, and an easy way to make sure there’s something cool to find for anyone who ventures into your maze. CREATING A BOW Unlike most weapons and tools, there’s only one way to craft a new bow – you need three sticks and three string. This will create a standard bow which does between 1 and 11 points of damage per shot (using a normal arrow) and has a durability of 384. But how can you improve it further? BOW ENCHANTMENTS There are four main enchantments which can be placed on a bow: POWER increases the damage done by each shot by 25% multiplied by the enchantment level plus one. Using standard arrows, Power I increases base damage by between 1 and 5 points. Power V increases it from as little as 2 to as many as 14 points. BUILD SPECS This month, the challenge is to build a lighthouse! Lighthouses are fairly simple: rounded buildings, several floors high, with a large light at the to p. Designed to guide ships at night, they’re usually constructed on islands a short distance away from the coast. Here are the things your build needs to have to qualify: ■ Several floors – at least three. ■ A large light on the top floor. ■ A striped appearance (to make it easier for ships to see). ■ Some bedroom lodgings for your lighthouse keeper. Other than that, you’re free to try whatever you want! 1 If you hold all three colours of froglight (pearlescent/pink, verdant/green, and ochre/yellow) in your inventory at the same time, you will receive the ‘With Our Powers Combined’ advancement. 2 Using bone meal on mangrove leaves will cause a mangrove propagule to grow from the bottom of the block, as long as there is space beneath them! WHAT IS AN ANCIENT CITY? Introduced in The Wild Update, an ancient city is a vast, sprawling metropolis found deep underground. They only spawn in the deep dark biome at a level of -51 – that’s over a hundred blocks depth from where the sea level is, and 50 down from where deepslate starts to replace stone! Ancient cities are mostly made of up deepslate blocks, although you’ll find a lot of sculk and some wool which were presumably added by the former inhabitants because of their ability to muffle sculk shriekers and prevent wardens from being summoned. The city structure is similar in each case, with a large central area containing a huge frame of reinforced deepslate and long corridors off to the sides. You’ll find many strange areas…

COLLECTING ENDER PEARLS When a player or a tame wolf kills an enderman, it has a 50% chance to drop an ender pearl. The number of chances can be increased by the Looting enchantment to a maximum of four pearls with Level III Looting. Pearls can also be found in stronghold altar chests, or traded for by expert-level cleric villagers who sell one pearl for five emeralds. Piglins have a roughly one in 50 chance to offer 2–4 ender pearls in exchange for a gold ingot. USING AN ENDER PEARL As items, ender pearls can be used to safely teleport short distances. STEP 1: EXTRACTING MINECRAFT’S FILES The first thing you need to do is uncompress Minecraft’s resource files. To do this, follow these instructions: ■ Navigate to the Minecraft Java Edition directory. On Windows, the best way to do this is to press Windows Key + R (to bring up the run dialog box) and type %appdata% then press Enter.
