PICKAXE MATERIALS The pickaxe can be crafted in five different materials: wood, stone, iron, gold, and diamond. Although wood and gold can take higher level enchantments more easily, and gold picks are largely the fastest at breaking a block, there’s no question that the best of these is diamond. A diamond pickaxe has 1561 durability and can break a standard stone block in 0.3 seconds, so it’s good on its own, but the REAL reason you need one is because you can use a diamond pickaxe with a netherite ingot on a smithing table to create a netherite pickaxe – and with 2031 durability and the ability to break stone in 0.25 seconds, THAT is the best of the pickaxes. SOUL SAND ABOUT FIRE Soul sand appears in a few different places. You can find it in several of the Nether biomes, and in the Overworld it can be found in ancient cities. In the Nether, it generates at low levels (under Y=34) in nether wastes biomes, and all over the soul sand valley biome (the ones with blue flames and large bone fossils) alongside soul soil. It can also be found as part of hoglin stable chests in bastion remnants, and in nether wart rooms in Nether fortresses. You may also receive 2-8 blocks of soul sand when bartering with a piglin. In the Overworld, it is generated as part of ancient cities in small amounts. This is the only place it can be found outside the Nether. COLLECTING…

MINECRAFT VERSION 1.20 We start, of course, with the next version of the main game – version 1.20! This update doesn’t have a name yet, but we DO know two things. Firstly, that it’s coming out in 2023 (no surprise there!) and secondly, that it’s being built around the themes of self-expression, creativity, and representation. ZOMBIE VILLAGERS Zombie villagers are easy to spot – mostly because they’re dressed in their old clothes! There’s a 5% chance (1 in 20) that any regular zombie spawned will be a zombie villager. You can always find one in an igloo basement (as long as you’re not on Peaceful difficulty mode!). Half of all igloos have a basement, accessible from a trapdoor hidden under the carpet. Inside, you’ll find everything needed to cure a zombie villager: a brewing stand with a splash potion of Weakness and a chest with at least one golden apple – and a zombie villager! BUILD SPECS With its mixture of swords, boats, islands, and oceans, Minecraft practically begs you to build your own pirate ship! Sadly, you can’t sail one around, but you can have just as much fun building it! FINDING SHIPWRECKS Spotting a shipwreck is usually pretty easy – they tend to spawn in places where they’re visible just under the surface of the water, though they can also spawn on land or with their masts protruding from the water. They can even spawn embedded high up in an iceberg! There’s no foolproof way to spot a shipwreck, but a potion of Night Vision will make it easier to see what’s under the surface of an ocean – so if you have access to one, that’ll help. ABOUT CLOCKS You can use a clock to tell you what time the Overworld is in its day-night cycle, which allows you to know how long you have until dawn or dusk when mobs will either appear or disappear. This is particularly useful if you are underground or indoors and cannot see where the sun is! Clocks only function in the Overworld and will spin randomly in any other dimension, since there is no day-night cycle in the Nether or the End. GETTING CLOCKS Clocks can be fairly easily crafted even early in the game – you simply need four gold ingots and a single piece of redstone dust, all of which can be obtained with a small amount of mining and/or exploration! Hey Alex! We’re big fans of the Java Edition too! But to answer your questions: It’s pretty simple once you know how – just open the chat console and type in the command/give @s minecraft:command_block 1 – this command will give the person executing it one command block. You can change the number to anything higher to give yourself more, but remember they only stack in groups of 64! That really depends on what you want to do with it! We’re a big fan of simple commands that can do things like change the weather or time of day, but if you play around you’ll fi nd all sorts of commands are available. If you want to do something, there’s probably a command that’ll help you do it. That’s a tough one…

OBSIDIAN FLOOR It’s hard for players to approach your base without travelling over land, and that makes it VERY easy for you to spot them, especially from a high vantage point. One way they might try to get around this is by tunnelling in. It’s not exactly difficult to dig through the soil and then up into someone’s base. All you need is a shovel and a half-decent pickaxe. To stop anyone trying this, you should cover the bottom of your base with obsidian – the more you have, the better! Obsidian takes a lot of work to break, especially if you don’t have diamond tools, so placing a layer of obsidian blocks beneath the floor of your base will prevent almost anyone from breaking in too quickly – and…
