THE NEXT UPDATE As yet unnamed, the secrets of Minecraft’s next major update are shrouded in secrecy, and that makes it hard to know exactly what’ll be in there. What you WILL see in the game fairly soon are bamboo-type wood blocks, including the new raft-type boat and hanging signs – not to mention the addition of the new camel mob! ABOUT FIRE CHARGES A fire charge is a craftable item which can be used to set a block on fire or crafted into a weapon. They are consumed when used, but will light TNT, nether portals, campfires and candles just like a flint & steel. Unlike the latter, they cannot be used to make a creeper detonate instantly, although this behaviour will be added in version 1.19.3. If placed in a dispenser, a fire charge will become a small fireball when dispensed. When the fireball hits a mob, it deals 5 damage instantly and up to 4 additional damage from setting the target alight. PROTECT & SURVIVE Wherever you build a house, defences are important for keeping mobs out. Make sure there are high walls surrounding the building and space to expand a little. We enclosed part of a village to make a small compound, including the pre-built farms for a food source, a well, and some livestock: sheep. Ensure the interior is well-lit otherwise you’ll find mobs spawning inside the ‘safe’ area, and that’s something you definitely don’t want – one creeper and, whether you survive or not, all your hard work will be undone! MAY 2009: FIRST EVER MINECRAFT RELEASES Inspired by a game called ‘Infiniminer’, developer Notch publicly released his own game, called Minecraft, on 17th May 2009. This would become the Java Edition and the first version is said to have taken one weekend to code! From this point on, Minecraft would enter a phase of releases and upgrades that continue to this day – you can still play many of them! TRAPDOOR! FINDING TRAPDOORS There are two main types of trapdoor: iron and wooden. Iron trapdoors are found in ancient cities and can only be opened by a redstone signal. Wooden trapdoors can be found at the entrances to basements in half of all igloos, in shipwrecks, and some villages. They can be opened and closed by the player as well as a redstone signal, and come in ten different varieties based on the type of planks they were crafted with. CRAFTING TRAPDOORS To craft a wooden trapdoor, put six matching planks of oak, spruce, birch, jungle, mangrove, dark oak, or acacia onto a crafting grid.
