As the theme of Salute is ‘cavalry’ the organisers had a lot of choice for a free figure. They reached out to Wargames Atlantic. This manufacturer has lots of experience, of course, with over 100 hard plastic sets under their belts and (when I’m writing this in early December 2025) close to 600 digital sets. The Warlords team have worked together with the WA sculptor Thai Ngo, to produce a plastic sprue miniature of th famous arab leader Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, founder of the Ayyubid Dynasty of Muslim Egypt and Syria and more commonly known in the west as Saladin. ATHENA ARRIVES Gods help us! Although this has been touted previously, we have finally seen a copy of Warriors of Athena, the new solo and coop play game by Osprey and written by Joe McCullough. It’s over 120 pages and lavishly illustrated and is set, as the name implies, in the cinematic world of heroic battles in ancient Greece. Designed for 28mm but scalable equally well up or down from that, it’s an exclusively D20 based system and a couple of different colours will be useful You’ll also need a standard deck of playing cards to run various events. CARNAGE IN THE WEST WOOD Twenty-three thousand killed, wounded or missing in action out of some eighty-four thousand engaged made Antietam one of the most ruinous battles Americans have ever fought. But Antietam exploded the myth of Confederate invulnerability and provided Abraham Lincoln with the opportunity to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Antietam is a complex battle with several phases. This scenario focuses on an event that lasted barely 20 minutes and involved elements of the Union’s strongest Corps; Sumner’s II Corps being hit by two of Jackson’s divisions under McLaws and Walker. Last month we looked at the huge variety of rules, figure sizes and types of engagement that makes the Peninsular part of the Napoleonic Wars so tempting. This month we’ll look at a campaign background for smaller scale actions. This is essentially a skirmish campaign with a small cast of characters on a mission. This naval engagement was fought between squadrons of the British Grand Fleet and the Kaiserliche Marine (High Seas Fleet). The British had intercepted German wireless transmissions and so surprised the smaller and slower German squadron, which fled for home. During a stern chase lasting several hours, the British caught up with the Germans and engaged them with long-range gunfire. The British disabled Blücher, the rearmost German ship, and the Germans put the British flagship HMS Lion out of action. Poor communications led to the British ships calling off the pursuit to sink Blücher meaning the rest of the German squadron escaped. The German vesels returned to harbour with some ships in need of extensive repairs. Lion made it back to port but was out of action for several months. The…

In last month’s issue I described how I built a tall timber framed barn from cardboard, balsawood, green insulation foam and DAS modelling clay. In this month’s magazine I will give details of how I painted the model. But first a short recap. The Olde Barn first appeared in my self published and now out-of-production book Dampfpanzerwagon Guide No.2 – More Wargame Terrain. It was inspired by a similar model constructed by Joao Sousa which was in turn based on structures seen in the film The Brothers Grimm (2005). My Olde Barn uses elements of the Joao model, images from the film and some details from the internet.
