What is claimed to be the largest competitive and touring car rally in the Southern Hemisphere – the Adelaide Rally of South Australia – is being staged this year from November 21st-23rd. Backed by the South Australian State Government and name-sponsored by Shannons, an Australian company that specialises in car insurance, the event will see more than 450 cars taking part. It features three days of tarmac stages in and around the beautiful city of Adelaide. The cars will also take to the Adelaide Hills, including the Wairoa spectator stage at Aldgate on Saturday 22nd with a lunch stop at Strathalbyn in the wine-growing Fleurieu Peninsula. The vast majority of Minis were fitted with a heater from new. The exceptions were some of those that were exported to hot climates and earlier basic models where a heater was an optional extra – something that is unthinkable for an everyday car in Britain today! Mini heaters are not known for their efficiency but in reality, they are no worse than many other cars of the same period. Apart from the common sense issue of maintaining the heating system, the in-built inefficiency is one of two additional reasons to keep everything tip-top – the other being that keeping a Mini engine cool, particularly those with a side-mounted radiator, can be difficult in crosswinds and in hot weather and/or heavy traffic. The fabulous 1964 Austin Mini Cooper S that Team Mini Spares runs, constructed last year in Sweden by historic rally ace and former Volvo Competition Manager Hans-Åke Söderqvist of Söderqvist Engineering SE, was never put together with the intention of being a one-trick pony. The main focus for the car was to celebrate Mini Spares’ 50th Anniversary and then to both showcase and test many of the parts that they produce for sale, as well as testing out new ideas and concepts.
