EJ Osborne is lying on the floor of his stone-built workshop, covered in sawdust. For Emma White, her new home projects went a step further, inspiring her blog, Apogee Interiors, and the realisation she should really be in interior design. Now back at uni after spending years working in human resources, she’s in her element. “Once you quiet your mind, your inner voice surprises you.” We all experience a gazillion thoughts in our brains at any given time. We cling to the unhealthy ones by default (“You’re too old for that project”), while other thoughts full of creative potential (“Start a conversation with that inspiring person ...”) mostly vanish before we take any action on them. A mindful practice helps me sort through and choose the thoughts that have elevating potential. They’re whispers from my intuition that carry the promise of bringing meaning through creative inspired action – that’s the process from which my wall hanging project came. Floral traditions The Roman goddess Flora probably wore the first flower crown as an abundant harbinger of spring. Many cultures view such crowns as symbols of youth, and young girls wear these flower halos to celebrate the first of May. The crowns are also increasingly popular with brides who want to forgo the more traditional veil. Simple pleasures The model for this corona is my niece, Avalon, who loves wearing a wreath of flowers as much as any little girl. Such wreaths make a wonderful afternoon project for youngsters at play in fields of daisies, snapdragons, or in this case, purple muscari, often called grape hyacinth.
