Lockdown has cost budget gym franchise PureGym about £500,000 a day, the company’s boss told the BBC. Eight months of closures have seen the 275 gyms rack up about £120m in costs with no revenue to cover them. While the government furlough scheme has covered a portion of staff salaries, the business still has many other costs, as well as “sizeable” rent arrears. Italian heiress Camilla de Bourbon had to pay a £2m fine this week as part of a “bitter inheritance dispute” over her mother’s €250m (£216m) trust fund, says Harriet Dennys in The Mail on Sunday. The annual deficit has spiked towards 20% of GDP this financial year. That is higher than during the financial crisis and is eclipsed only by the two world wars, notes Isabel Stockton of the Institute for Fiscal Studies. It won’t come down quickly either: post-crisis “economic scarring could keep borrowing elevated for years”. Yet with ten-year gilts yielding less than 0.7%, the costs of servicing that debt are the lowest they have been in three centuries. With borrowing so cheap the chancellor’s short-term focus will be on nurturing the recovery rather than fighting the deficit. Yet ultimately net tax rises of £60bn will be needed to “balance the books” and pay for the costs of an ageing population.…

The European initial public offering (IPO) market has had its best start to the year since 2015 thanks to a series of technology and e-commerce listings, says Nikou Asgari in the Financial Times. Companies have sold €8.4bn in equity through 16 deals. Around 70% of the equity sold was in companies that have been boosted by the shift to online shopping during the pandemic, including card retailer Moonpig and self-service parcel-locker business InPost. Floats such as online car dealer Auto1’s in Frankfurt and mobile-gaming company Huuuge in Warsaw have allowed bankers to highlight Europe’s digital offerings, which are usually overshadowed by Wall Street’s tech companies.…

Only a few weeks after the 737 MAX jet was finally cleared to resume flying after an hiatus of almost two years, prompted by safety concerns, Boeing is facing another “public-relations nightmare”, says Alan Tovey in The Daily Telegraph. The latest incident comes after one of its Boeing 777 jets was forced to make an emergency landing when an engine burst into flames, leading to “debris being scattered far and wide on the ground”. Last weekend, the boss of the Leon fast-food chain, John Vincent, made some mildly critical remarks about the dangers of extending lockdown any further. Immediately he faced furious accusations that he was endangering lives, putting profits before public health, and only trying to further his own narrow commercial interests. The same fate has befallen any other business leader brave enough to question whether we can keep the economy closed down forever. Surely this is crazy. Nothing Vincent said was especially controversial. For around 40 years, inflation has not been a worry for investors in most markets. Indeed, since the early 2000s, deflation has been viewed as the biggest macroeconomic threat. Banks are often prepared to make a juicy switching offer in order to entice new customers to their current accounts. It is a successful tactic. According to data from the Current Account Switch Service (CASS), Halifax notched up 22,000 new current accounts between July and September last year – the largest gain of any provider in that period. Despite the ongoing pandemic the US stockmarket continues to boom. As a result, valuations are at record levels, with the benchmark S&P 500 index now trading on atrailing price/ earnings (p/e) ratio of 30. While this is partly due to the fact that earnings have been depressed by the pandemic, even if you compare it with predicted profits the market still looks pricey. Edward Yardeni of Yardeni Research estimates that it is on a forward p/e of 22, the highest level since 2001 and nearly double the earnings multiple it was trading at a decade ago. It is, in short, very difficult to find shares that look priced at bargain levels. The bank will sell its retail arms and invest $6bn to expand in Hong Kong, China and Singapore. The move reinforces a strategy set last year, which will “shift $100bn of capital to Asia” to “become a market leader in wealth management” there. Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a theory that tries to work out how over- or undervalued one currency is relative to another. It does this by comparing the price of identical goods in different economies. The idea is that a similar basket of goods should cost roughly the same wherever you go. Why? Because if goods are cheaper in one country than another, then that country should be able to export them to the other for a profit. In turn, those sales would boost demand for the exporter’s currency, driving the exchange rate higher, and eliminating the difference between the two. The latest figures from the US Congressional Budget Office were shocking… but not surprising. The budget deficit will total $2.3trn – 10.3% of GDP –in 2021 and total $12.3trn (4.4% of GDP) over the next decade. Debt will reach a new record as a share of the economy, growing from over 79% of GDP at the end of 2019 to more than 102% by the end of 2021. It will grow another $13.6trn by the end of 2031, ultimately reaching $35.3trn. It could be even higher if policymakers enact $2trn of additional fiscal relief. “The government is flat broke. Uber’s share price has been “sent into reverse” thanks to a “landmark” judgement over the employment status of the ride-hailing app’s UK drivers, says Simon Freeman in the Evening Standard. The UK Supreme Court has decided to uphold a 2016 ruling by an employment tribunal that drivers on its platform should be classified as Uber workers rather than self-employed. This means that Uber’s drivers in the UK are entitled to “a minimum wage, overtime, sick pay, holiday pay, pensions” and possibly retrospective compensation. The ruling is definitely bad news for Uber, as it threatens its entire business model, says Morgan Schondelmeier in The Daily Telegraph. The government says people will “not face major restrictions if they refuse” a vaccine and is considering recent negative Covid-19 tests as an alternative to “vaccine passports”, says Jim Pickard in the FT. Despite Boris Johnson’s concerns about the ethical issues of Covid-19 status certification (via an app or documentation), people may be asked for proof that they are disease-free for admission to workplaces, stadiums or restaurants. An anomaly in the US Constitution is the status of Washington DC. Its population of 702,455 makes it larger than Wyoming and Vermont, yet it is a federal district under the control of Congress, rather than a state. This is a legacy of the days in which it was just asmall town inhabited by lawmakers. It pays to be a European investment banker right now; less so if you work in another part of the business, such as retail banking, say Owen Walker, Stephen Morris and Attracta Mooney in the Financial Times. The former, such as those at Credit Suisse and Barclays, are set to enjoy increased bonuses after a bumper year of trading and deal making; the latter will see their payouts cut or cancelled altogether.
