Preparations are at an “advanced stage” for HSBC, one of the world’s biggest lenders, to try again to bolt together its commercial banking division with its global banking and markets unit. The revamp could lead to hundreds of job losses in senior ranks, says Patrick Hosking in The Times. While HSBC attempted a partial merger of the two divisions in 2020, it had to abandon the effort because of Covid. However, as its shares have greatly lagged their peers in the past nine months, it will restart the plans in the hope of saving up to $300m. French advertising “king” Publicis has become the world’s most valuable communications and marketing firm, worth €25bn, says Stanislas Feuillebois in Le Revenu. While rivals such as Britain’s WPP struggle amid a weak economy, Publicis defied macroeconomic headwinds to register net profit of €773m in the first half of 2024, a 24% rise year on year. The group, whose brands include Saatchi & Saatchi, is reaping the rewards of early bets on digital channels, and is now putting its data expertise to work in artificial intelligence through its new CoreAI platform. There has only been a slight move in the polls for the US presidential election, with Kamala Harris still narrowly ahead, or at least neck and neck in most electoral college projections. But this hasn’t stopped punters making a sharp move towards Donald Trump in the betting markets. With £89.3m matched on Betfair, the former president is at 1.74 (58.1%) to win, compared with 2.42 (41.2%) for Harris. The best odds from the bookies are 4/6 (60%) on Trump from QuinnBet or Harris on 11/8 (42.1%) with William Hill. When we talk about the outlook for interest rates, my rule of thumb is simple: central banks are likely to be slower to start cutting than markets initially expect, but end up cutting deeper. This sounds like a very broad generalisation, but if you look at month-by-month charts of interest rates over the last few cycles (say 30 years) versus market expectations for where rates would go in future (taken at the same historical point – so a snapshot of what investors thought at the time), a loose pattern looks pretty clear to me. When rates are approaching a peak, markets tend to keep assuming that they will go a bit higher than they eventually do. After the central bank pauses, they tend to assume cuts are coming soon. At its peak in 2018, the broker claimed to control 1.6 million containers. In reality, it owned only about 600,000 of them. That year it became obvious that the firm was operating a Ponzi scheme, taking money from new investors to pay off old ones. “Markets are not efficient,” says Joe Bauernfreund, manager of the £1.3bn AVI Global Trust (LSE: AGT), “as many companies are overlooked by investors.” This leads to a portfolio that is very different from a conventional global fund, but with comparable returns. If market leadership changes, AGT could move into pole position. It invests in “overlooked companies trading at wide discounts to intrinsic value”. These fall into three categories: family-controlled holding companies (41% of the portfolio), closed-end funds trading on wide discounts to net asset value (NAV, 30%) and Japanese, mostly smaller, companies (23%). “People are sceptical about investing in family-controlled companies, but we take the opposite view,” says Bauernfreund. You might be surprised to learn that the world’s largest fund-management house isn’t a for-profit organisation. The “Big Four” investment fund managers worldwide are Vanguard, Fidelity, BlackRock and State Street. BlackRock is the largest of the pack, but Vanguard holds the crown in passive funds. Its largest funds, the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund and the Vanguard 500 Index fund, manage around $3trn in assets compared with Fidelity’s total assets under management of around $6trn across all of its funds. However, the company is owned by its funds, which are, in turn, owned by their investors. It’s very similar to the mutual or building society model. It’s been another mixed week for my long tips, with five going up and three falling. Engineering firm Rolls-Royce moved up from 523p to 536p, retailer Next rose from 9,766p to 10,220p and cruise-ship operator Royal Caribbean increased from $177 to $201. Payments firm PayPal rose from $78 to $79 and retailer Marks & Spencer advanced from 375p to 384p. However, broker Alpha Capital fell from 2,200p to 2,181p, while property developer Harworth, which specialises in regenerating brownfield sites, slipped from 190p to 183p. ● Taxpayers spent a total of around 700 years on the phone to HMRC in the past year as average wait times keep lengthening. Research by accountancy group UHY Hacker Young found that the duration of the average call to HMRC has increased by 19% over the past year to 27 minutes and two seconds. “Too frequently, when the government talks about increasing HMRC funding, it ends up being for tax investigations,” says Neela Chauhan, partner at UHY Hacker Young. Global turmoil is driving rising interest in defence shares. BAE Systems has climbed a fifth over the past year alone. During the Cold War, defence shares traded at a premium to the wider market for long periods, before moving into discount territory after the fall of the USSR, notes Jon Sindreu in The Wall Street Journal. A durable rally will depend on sustained increases in government defence investment, but for all the rhetoric there is little sign that this is happening. In fact, US defence spending as a percentage of GDP is lower now than it was during the War on Terror. Tesla’s widely trumpeted event last week, which unveiled plans for a robotaxi and related services, have left investors “flummoxed”, says Dan Gallagher in The Wall Street Journal. The lack of detail about either the cars or the service have prompted the market to conclude that Tesla’s “toothless” dream “isn’t going to be a problem for Uber”. Europastry has postponed its initial public offering (IPO) for the second time in less than four months. It cited market instability caused by the geopolitical situation, says the Financial Times. The US courts have ruled that Google is, in effect, a monopoly. That will probably not come as a great surprise. Most of us had probably noticed that the company completely dominates search on the internet, that it has at least half the mobile market, and that from maps, to email, to media, it has an effective lock on how we all use the web. Last week, the Department of Justice in the US went a step further, arguing that the only way to fix that was for the business to be broken up. What might that look like? The Magnificent Seven is a nickname for the group of companies that has been responsible for much of the gains in the US stockmarket over the past two years. The term became popular after Bank of America analyst Michael Hartnett used it in a research note in May 2023, and has largely taken over from the FAANGs – Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google (Alphabet) – as the preferred shorthand for the large-cap growth stocks that are dominating the market. Journalist Rose Horowitch spoke to 33 professors in the US for a piece in The Atlantic and found that students today are “increasingly unable to manage entire books”. Courses are cutting reading requirements and teaching through excerpts instead. Similarly, America’s National Assessment of Educational Progress found a long-term decline in the number of 13-year-olds reading for fun. Shares in Gerresheimer surged 6.8% after US activist investor Eminence Capital disclosed it had bought a 5.43% stake in the German manufacturer of glass and plastic containers for medicines, says Reuters. Talks between the US hedge fund and Gerresheimer’s management began in June. “This stake might pressure Gerresheimer into improving its communication and probably also its structure,” according to Christian Reindl from Union Investment, which owns a 1.3% stake in the firm. The US airline industry has had a terrible record of losing money. Its history of bankruptcies and bailouts has been so bad that legendary investor Warren Buffett quipped in 2007 that it might have been better for investors had someone shot the Wright Brothers before they invented the first working aeroplane. Capital gains tax (CGT) is levied on profits made when you sell assets. It covers most assets, including shares, property (if it isn’t your main home) and cryptocurrency. It is also due on personal possessions such as jewellery, paintings or antiques if you sell an item for more than £6,000. A notable exception is your car. We all have a CGT allowance – £3,000 – but if your profits from the sale of one or more assets exceeds that in a tax year you must pay CGT. How much you’ll pay depends on your income-tax band and what you sold to make the gain. Basic-rate taxpayers pay CGT at 10%, except on residential property, when the rate rises to 18%. Something strange is going on with small businesses. Data published last week by the Office for National Statistics shows that the number of sole traders in the UK fell 4% last year – and has now declined 11% since 2019; by contrast, the number of small-business owners operating through companies rose 1% in 2023 and is up 4% on five years ago. The data feels counter-intuitive because tax changes have made it progressively less attractive to run your business through a company structure in recent years. In other words, some small-business owners may be paying more tax than they need to – possibly, say small-business experts, because the rules are poorly understood. The Russell 2000 is known as the world’s “biggest small index”. It offers investors the chance to invest in the heart of America. These small and mid-cap stocks are diverse and offer more domestic focus than the multinational giants at the top of the S&P 500. In addition to providing important portfolio diversification, smaller companies typically outperform in the long run owing to their greater scope for long-term growth. Excluding the “Magnificent Seven” from the S&P 500’s return in 2023 reveals that the remaining 493 stocks actually lagged the Russell 2000. US stocks are likely to underperform markets outside the US over the next 10 years, says Jeremy Grantham, the co-founder and chief investment strategist of asset manager GMO. Forget downsizing: Barclays wants us all to consider a “right-size” move to a more suitable property.
