The new Mazda3 5-Door replaces last year’s nicely wrought but underpowered Protege5. Competing for eyeballs against the sport-compact darling Honda Civic, sales-rich Toyota Corolla, and cheap-wheels Scions, Hyundais, and Kias, the Mazda3 brings muscular-looking sheetmetal, sporty driving characteristics, and a high level of sophistication to the segment.
There’s a lot to check out in the new compact Mazda, which rides on chassis architecture shared with up-brand models like the Volvo S40 and V50. Bulging fender flares, short overhangs, a body-colored grille and V-contoured hood, sloping hatch-back roof, and beefy 17-inch alloy wheels set a sporty tone.
