The Revero is a rare thing— an electric vehicle with a range-extending internal combustion engine. It can be “filled” with both gasoline (9.5 gallons) and electricity, but it uses gasoline solely to generate electricity, supplying juice to a battery pack and/or to power electric motors that in turn move the vehicle, just like a diesel locomotive. Under the Revero’s impossibly long, low hood lies a GM-sourced 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces a maximum 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. GM, Hyundai/Kia, and Mazda all ditched six-cylinder engines from their midsize sedans for turbo or hybridized fourbangers, and Honda will follow suit with its next Accord. A transverse I-4 weighs less and packages tighter than a V-6, so the entire lineup benefits from weight and space savings of not accommodating a low-selling V-6 variant. (Toyota pegs current V-6 share at 5–6 percent historically.) But Toyota GM Jack Hollis says dealers demanded the V-6 be retained. They feel the V-6 helps live down the brand’s vanilla reputation—especially in its new wrapper. Hollis described the V-6 Camry as the market’s most aspirational midsize sedan, marketing high ground he won’t yield. Full disclosure: Our first drive of the all-new 2018 Hyundai Kona subcompact SUV lasted about eight minutes and was of a Korean-spec vehicle. Still, that was enough time to notice the steering’s heft, which pegs this as a more mature cute-ute player than, say, the Nissan Juke and Toyota C-HR. Our mini test drive included some uneven surfaces and crowned roadways. The suspension sopped it up fairly well, but those settings could change for the U.S. market. The base engine is a 147 hp, 132 lb-ft 2.0-liter fourcylinder— on par with the Honda HR-V (141 hp) and Toyota C-HR (144 hp). Former Ferrari boss Luca di Montezemolo routinely proclaimed the company would never build a sedan or an SUV. But with Sergio Marchionne at the helm, Maranello insiders are learning to never say never. Rumors out of Italy suggest a Ferrari sedan and SUV are both under discussion, and this time it’s for real. Hot tip is the SUV is the favored option, as the market for sedans—even ones with glamorous badges—is cooling fast. If it gets the green light, the Ferrari SUV will likely be based on the platform and all-wheel-drive hardware of the next-gen FF. With Rolls-Royce, Aston Martin, and Lamborghini now following Bentley and Porsche into the SUV business, there’s an air of inevitability about Ferrari joining the party. Kia hopes its 2018 Stinger GT can place the brand in the same conversation as established German luxury brands—so much so that it invited us to drive an early-build model around the notorious Nürburgring. I discovered the Stinger GT to feel purposefully heavy and solid, pressed into the ground by an unseen hand and making the best use of the grip it affords. At roughly 3,800 pounds in rear-drive form, my loaded-up Stinger could lose a little weight, but it manages the weight it has well. The adjustable dampers do a commendable job of controlling body motions and allowing the car to lean rather than flop on its outside tires. With the ouster of Mark Fields as CEO of FordMotor Co., the howls came quick from the enthusiast crowd regarding his replacement: former Steelcase chief Jim Hackett. But was the outrage well placed?
