letter of the month outside the box I'm wondering if this archaic thinking is common in the automotive industry ("Technologue"). Why is everyone suggesting how to make a better-accelerating engine when CVT technology is on the rise? Want fuel economy? Try a constant-speed engine, optimized to run at only one speed and mated to a CVT. Add in such technologies as direct injection to increase efficiency; toss such ideas as variable valve timing, which adds weight to the valvetrain thus lowering efficiency. Turbo lag also could be completely eliminated. Fuel efficiency could easily outperform a hybrid's, and straight-line acceleration could eclipse that of most sports cars by eliminating gearshifts and by the increased peak power at the designed running rpm of the engine. BASHING AN OLD Toyota FJ on the rocks of the Rubicon Trail isn’t for the faint of heart—while this sport/utility icon is durable and reliable, parts become harder to find every year. Caring for an FJ40 doesn’t have to be expensive, but it’ll get more difficult as time goes on. California-based TLC, a company that specializes in restoring and modifying classic Land Cruisers, has designed and built a new-age FJ that could solve this problem and also takes the platform way beyond what was possible when it was new. YOU’RE PROBABLY wondering why we included the Ram 1500 in our 2006 Truck of the Year competition, especially since it looks nearly identical to the 2005 model. How different could it be from the previous year? A lot, to say the least. LINCOLN’S SECOND foray into the pickup market is a much better execution than its first. Remember the Blackwood? The Mark LT is a more down-to-earth design, with practical capabilities that allow it to work like a truck if needed, something the Blackwood wasn't able to offer. Based on a fully equipped Ford F-150 SuperCrew platform, the Mark LT is identical in structure. Included are the obligatory unique grille, badging, chrome accents, and wheel options—nice, but perhaps not differentiated enough to merit the Lincoln nameplate. FINALLY! It’s been more than a year since we first sampled the feisty new European-spec fifth-generation GTI (MotorTrend, December 2004), which has been on sale across the continent since June 2005. WE’RE NOT sure who bagged this amazing grab shot, but we know it was a Motor Trend or Petersen Publishing staffer who paid a visit to the Ferrari factory in Modena, Italy. In this casually arranged happy snap taken in late 1955, as best as we can tell, he captured seven historic machines. The sport racer in front is a 500TRC, which predated the 250 Testa Rossa. In the background, from left, is the one-off 375 America built for Fiat chieftain Gianni Agnelli, a 250 GT Competizione, a 375 Mille Miglia, two more competition-spec 250 GTs, and a 410 Superamerica. IN TRUTH, the 300C was probably a Hail Mary play for DaimlerChrysler. The company had nothing to lose by gambling on a reardrive sedan with swaggering style and a Hemi under the hood. That it's turned out to be a huge hit probably continues to surprise a few folks in the quieter offices at DaimlerChrysler's Auburn Hills headquarters. It shouldn't. They need only look at the sales of pickup trucks over the past 20 years to realize Americans never really lost their love affair with V-8s, rear drive, and expansive sheetmetal. SVT ENGINEERS are busy putting the final touches on what'll unquestionably be Ford's most wanted car for 2006—the Shelby GT500. Under the hood is a supercharged 5.4-liter iron-block V-8 widely believed to produce somewhere between 450 and 480 horsepower. However, some Ford insiders hint the GT500 badge isn't merely a reference to the iconic 1967-1970 Shelbys of the same name, but an indication of the engine's real output. SVT engineers have long maintained they've wanted to keep some distance between the GT500 and the Ford GT, which has an all-aluminum supercharged 5.4-liter V-8 rated at 550 horsepower. IS THIS HYUNDAI concept hinting at the coupe version of a range of reardrive sport sedans? Hard to tell until it's unveiled at the Detroit show this month, but the dash-to-axle relationship on the Hyundai HC-9 Talus looks long enough for rear drive. Hyundai says the Talus points to its new direction for sports cars. The Tiburon, which will end production after the 2008 model year, will be replaced by a slightly larger rear-drive coupe, based on the 2008 BH, a "poor man's Bimmer," with V-8 power and rear drive. MASERATI’S Coupe/Spyder replacement has, after much internal wrangling, restarted development. The new coupe, a 2009 model expected to launch in 2008, will be bigger and more expensive—a car to tackle the Bentley Continental GT, according to one insider. This means it's likely the current Coupe will continue for some time after the launch of the new coupe, which will use a shortened version of the Quattroporte platform and an enhanced version of the glorious Ferrari-related V-8 engine currently rated at 390 horsepower from 4.2 liters. The engine has considerable scope for uprating, enabling the 0-to-60-mph time to fall to near 4.5 seconds. The Quattroporte's rear transaxle, which Maserati boss Karl-Heinz Kalbfell describes as integral to the brand, also will be retained, in this case with a six-speed Cambiocorsa sequential shift.…

WITH SPIKING fuel prices, an onslaught of import competition, hurricanes, and a spotlight on hybrid and crossover alternatives, the full-size truck market—traditionally the source of most of GM's profits—has been hard hit. Several models in the company’s full-size range have experienced double-digit sales losses (in some cases 40-percent monthly sales declines) compared with last year. And the incentives just to move the iron are large and expensive. MITSU is promoting the Raider as the only import V-8 alternative for buyers who don't want a full-size truck. It’s offered in a number of configurations, thanks in large part to sharing its underthings with the Dodge Dakota. Another in this year’s clone of-the-year competition (the others being the Lincoln LT and Isuzu i280/i350), the Raider 4.7-liter V-8 and five-speed combination didn’t perform as its displacement and cylinder number had us expecting, matching the Lincoln’s last-place quarter-mile time (17.3 seconds). Maybe this shouldn’t have been a surprise, as the engine offers only 10 more horsepower than the Isuzu 3.5-liter 1-5 and 17 horses less than the Ridgeline’s DOHC 3.5-liter V-6. LIKE A one-ton hornet, the Exige exploits its 10.6-pound/horsepower figure to an uncanny degree. While it’s no drag-racer (a still impressive 4.7 seconds to 60 mph), it’ll corner at over 1.0 g and put a track lap together on par with many race cars. 2005 MAZDA3 Total mileage 19,098 IT’S ODD that the instrument-panel light dimmer adjusts only the gauge and center stack intensity and not the orange numbers on the gauge face. On dark, desolate roads, the numbers are too intense, and in all conditions, the uneven backlighting is annoying. GM! IS seriously considering building a V-6 version of its Kappa sports car (aka Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky). But the scuttlebutt around Motown is that this version would get an all-new body, a Chevy badge, and one of the most Iconic names in the GM sports-car pantheon—Sting Ray. It would be positioned as a muscular, entry-level Chevy sports car priced under the current Corvette range, but above the higher-end Pontiac and Saturn models. Given the enduring success of the Corvette, the Sting Ray plan seems plausible—and profitable. WE’VE BEEN talking about Audi's Lamborghini Gallardo-framed sports car for ages. Now, it finally has an official name. The production version of Audi's Le Mans quattro concept car will be called the R8 (thanks, Pontiac, for wasting "Le Mans" on a Daewoo). Named for the R8 endurance racer (as in 24 Heures du Mans), the most successful racing car of the modern era, the car will be built at Audi's Neckarsulm plant, which specializes in aluminum. The R8 shares its basic aluminum space frame, but no actual common parts, with the Gallardo. Engineers say it's designed to be much more day-today useable than the Lambo. That means more legroom, a bigger trunk, superior visibility, a smoother ride, and less noise. "It's our Porsche 911," a senior Audi source says. "It's…

GENERAL MOTORS is planning its next generation of Epsilon cars, which will use a reengineered version of the current platform. It's a truly global project that'll include the 2008 Opel Vectra in Europe, 2009 Saab 9-5,2010 Saab 9-3, 2011 Chevy Malibu/Pontiac G6, and 2012 Saturn Aura and Cadillac BLS. There also will be a Holden version for the first time. The basic platform development will be done at the General's Tech Center in Russelsheim, Germany, and the ability to build any Epsilon variant in any GM plant tooled up to build an Epsilon-platformed vehicle worldwide is a key goal of the program. MASERATI is considering an additional bigger-volume model line, a cheaper vehicle to sit beneath the Quattroporte and Coupe/Spyder but above top-end Alfa Romeos. Feasibility studies for that third model include a sub-Quattroporte sedan, based on a stretched version of Alfa's new Premium platform, as in the Alfa 159 and Brera. It has a control-arm front suspension and multilink rear, a transverse engine/transmission, and a sophisticated variable torque-split AWD system. The plan calls for a BMW X5-size Maserati crossover, using the 2008 Alfa Romeo crossover as its mechanical basis. Again, the platform is the premium components set with permanent AWD using Alfa's Torsen C center diff, but with taller ground clearance and bigger wheel-housings than in Alfa's 159 sedan and Brera coupe. A late iteration of the Land Cruiser 20 Series, it marked the birth of a 25-year era of FJ utility vehicles in the U.S. From the Cascades to the Adirondacks, dirt roads were destined to know the name Toyota. THE BASIS for Chevy’ss Colorado and GMC’ss Canyon midsize pickups, all-new models last year, was originally designed over 10 years ago by Isuzu’s engineering team. General Motors took the project in-house to make the look more U.S.-market friendly. The 4WD transfer case, with the longest powertrain warranty in the segment (seven years/75,000 miles), and the buttons to engage it on the dash remained Isuzu designs—imagine what these trucks might've looked like if Isuzu had had more control over the finished product. Functionally and architecturally, these trucks are the same as the Chevy and GMC midsizers. Isuzu will get about 10,000 units of the i280 (four-cylinder) and i350 (five-cylinder) midsizers, split between extended and crew cab configurations. YOU’D IMAGINE the unanimous vote for the Honda Ridgeline would be a surprising conclusion to our 2006 Truck of the Year showdown. Truth is. after two long days thudding over concrete freeway expansion joints, howling around a tight handling course, and skittering along a stony off-road trail, this one was about as simple as it gets. Which only makes the truck market’s hesitance toward this newfangled but remarkable machine all the more puzzling. DRIVING A sport/utility vehicle on the track was once about as much fun as playing beach volleyball in loafers. No more. After taking the new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 around California’s Willow Springs Raceway, we can visualize a showroom-stock race series built on this remarkable new SUV. Not only was Jeep’s uber-ute an absolute hoot ripping off laps at Willow, it also scorched most of the competition in the sprints, muscling its way in between Mercedes-Benz’s mighty ML55 AMG and Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo as one of the quickest sport/utilities we’ve ever tested. THE AFTERMARKET is flush with tuner parts for the Chrysler 300C. Sad to say, though, it seems as if one in three 300s in Los Angeles abounds with 22-inch spinner wheels, chrome, and a booming sound system. Nice, but where’s the beef? Tuners now offer mods for the 300C’s robust 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, but frankly a pumped and juiced 5.7-liter barely matches the output of a stock SRT-8’s 6.1-liter, so why waste your time? Rather, check the option box for the SRT-8 package, and you get 425 horsepower, a heavy-duty suspension, huge wheels and tires, massive Brembo-sourced disc brakes, a custom interior, and special bodywork. A HARDY PICKUP is always a welcome addition to our long-term test fleet. Not only does it offer capability that other vehicles don’t but, unlike the barebones utilitarian trucks of the past, a modern pickup is a nice place to spend long hours. The F-150’s interior epitomizes that philosophy: Materials are eye pleasing and high quality, leather is soft to the touch, and noise dramatically reduced for the 2004 model. Our FX4 long-termer, which joined the fleet in honor of the F-150’s win as 2004 Truck of the Year, came with an Audiophile sound system with six-disc changer and captain’s chairs.
