The energy crisis was well underway in the spring of 1974, and it dominated our coverage. We looked at the 50 best cars to drive during a fuel shortage, from the Datsun B210 (35.0 mpg) to the Pontiac Ventura (14.6 mpg). The latter featured the GTO package with a four-barrel carburetor and ram-air hood scoop, because, well, we are who we are.
We compared fuel-efficient imports, with the superior-handling Mazda 808 edging the Datsun 710, Fiat 128, Honda Civic, and Toyota Corona and Corolla. We found out what it took to get 45 mpg out of an ordinary ’74 Chevy Vega, which turned out to be a cocktail of parts, additives, and slow driving.
