North Wales has some of the best ‘natural’ riding in the world, much of it handcrafted by a core group of passionate trail builders. However, these unofficial trails are under threat, with landowners taking a dim view. After a COVID-fuelled boost in trail use exacerbated the problem, Trail Collective North Wales was formed to help safeguard them. Taking inspiration from Manon Carpenter’s Trails on Trial film and Dave Evans’ pioneering ‘Wild Trails’ articles (www.bikecorris.co.uk), TCNW aims to form constructive relationships between riders, trail builders and organisations such as Natural Resources Wales. STAR LETTER PASS IT ON I thought I’d write in to talk about how becoming a mother is influencing my riding and goals. In January I gave birth to my son Noah, after what was an exciting year for me racing four-cross. It isn’t that common to see women with babies in the sport, but this isn’t holding me back. It’s easy to overlook their importance, but when it comes to connecting your body to your bike, your shoes are a vital piece of equipment that can make or break your ride. TECH Q&A BOUNCE TO THE BOTTOM When I ride big drops and fast, steppy, rooty tracks, I’m getting a really loud clunk from my fork. I’m using all the travel, so assume it’s just the noise of the fork bottoming-out. Is this OK? What can I do to remedy it? Stanley Woolfe, via email Yes, it does sound like you’re bottoming-out your fork. As you’re using up all the travel, the fork is hitting its internal bump-stops, which creates the noise you describe. Bottoming-out isn’t a problem in itself – the bump stops are there for a reason. But if you’re doing it regularly, you may want to check that your suspension is set up properly for your weight and riding style. First off, check your sag levels are correct.…

Climbing Uplift vans with trailers, or a 4.6km climb up the Beast of Burden trail (20-40mins, depending on fitness). Time The longer tracks can take up to 10mins to descend, depending on speed and skill levels, while the shorter ones can be less than a minute long. With so many to choose from, plan to be there all day. The three bikes here represent just how differently similar-looking hardtails can ride once you hit the dirt. In terms of capability and sheer fun, for dynamic riding on purpose-built trails, the Kona and GT feel leagues ahead of the Sonder. That’s partially to be expected, considering that Alpkit’s design intentions for the Frontier lean more towards all-day rides and bikepacking. However, we weren’t totally sold on its ride quality anywhere, either in terms of how easy it was to adapt to its steering and handling, or of its comfort and damping, since the frame feels a bit jarring over choppy ground. You can learn to mountain bike anywhere that’s not too technically demanding, but a trail centre – a forest hub with waymarked, ability-graded routes, parking, toilets and often a cafe, too – is a safe and convenient place to start. There are blue-graded beginner routes all over the country; these are some of our favourites. SCOTLAND There are loads of great options north of the border, but our favourite has to be the Blue Route at Glentress Forest. Every trail is conceived from a vision. In this case, the vision was a striking view off out into the far distance. It’s often hard to give scale and perspective to a trail, especially one hidden in the woods, but this was the perfect opportunity. “On sending a photo of this newly-sculpted corner to the crew, a reply came back quickly. They asked whether I was just building turns where I wanted them, and if they were going to have to link them to the trail,” says its builder, Ben Gerrish. “In essence, they were right! But this idyllic, standalone patch of dirt became my reason for finishing the trail. We wove it all together and, as it turns out, that wasn’t the worst plan.” Fast-forward a month or so…

This is a team enduro event where three riders from each nation battle, with the winning team awarded the UCI Trophy of Nations rainbow jersey. Teams must consist of three men or three women, with both male and female Trophy of Nations medals up for grabs. The three team members all take to the course together, one behind another, and all their times count cumulatively towards the team result. Plus all riders must complete the race, so consistency (as well as speed) is crucial.…

Transition’s first e-bike , the Repeater, has been a long time coming, but looks like a pretty sorted ride. The frame is made from Japanese Toray carbon fibre, and comes with a lifetime warranty and a crash replacement scheme. A carbon cover on the underside of the down tube allows access to the big 630Wh battery, which is hooked up to a well-proven Shimano STEPS EP8 motor. Internal cabling gives a clean look, with the cables routed through the upper headset cup to keep things tidy, the downside being extra maintenance faff. A slack 64-degree head angle, relatively long 455mm chainstays and big 29in wheels mean the Repeater should have good stability on descents.
