When veteran journalist Lesley Stahl talks about her work as a reporter, no matter the topic, you can hear the excitement in the timbre of her voice. “It’s surprising how when I’m working on a story, it becomes my favorite,” says Stahl, a longtime correspondent with the CBS network’s iconic newsmagazine 60 Minutes. “Right now, I’m doing a story on the science of seaweed,” she says. “I’m falling in love with seaweed—go explain that, right? Naples potter extraordinaire Jim Rice does just that with his whimsical, Nemo-esque clay fish platters and mosaics that have been delighting Naples residents for more than four decades. Born in Kent, Ohio, Rice moved to Naples in 1973 and opened his first studio. In 1980, he expanded to his current location on Shadowlawn Drive. Winter residents returning for the season may be hunting in vain for one of their favorite French restaurants, Le Lafayette. The reason they can’t find it can be summed up in two words: Hurricane Irma. “Our roof collapsed during the storm in September,” says chef-owner Sebastien Maillard, whose restaurant had long been a fixture in downtown Naples, “and we were forced out due to water damage.” The restaurant has temporarily relocated to 3560 Tamiami Trail East, under the name of Bistro La Baguette. “We’ve recreated Le Lafayette with the same colors, design and cuisine,” Maillard says. “When the renovations are complete, our goal is to move back downtown and keep both locations operating.” The restaurant is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. Tile is a mainstay in bathroom design. While some may still prefer that it serve as a neutral backdrop, advances in technology have created more possibilities for customization and artistry than ever before. “As technology evolves, the trend in tile is moving more toward waterjet mosaic design,” says Jenifer Davison of Collins & DuPont Design Group. “It gives you more options because you can literally change every element to it. You can use any color stone, substitute glass or mirror, or use a combination. CHEF GREG SCARLATOS Unlike most chefs, cooking was an accidental career for Greg Scarlatos. He whipped up meals for his fraternity brothers in college, but didn’t take his first restaurant job—as a breakfast cook at a Holiday Inn—until he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English. Scarlatos logged stints as a line cook at several boutique French restaurants, then honed his skills at the Country Club of Orlando under master chef Raymond Pitts. It was a crash course in the culinary arts, working on “everything from ice carving to Lowcountry swamp food,” he says.
